Job Summary Works independently to maintains and improve the appearance of Cleveland State University (CSU) grounds including athletic fields ensuring that all outdoor areas are clean, safe, and visually appealing. Performs routine maintenance and landscaping construction projects. Removes debris and refuse from outdoor spaces and operates and maintains groundskeeping equipment. Performs snow removal and de-icing during winter months. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma, GED or state recognized equivalent.
Two (2) years of landscaping or horticultural experience, preferably with a commercial contractor or for a large commercial complex.
Valid pesticide applicator's license or the ability to pass the Ohio examination within one (1) year of hire.
Valid driver's license and ability to establish and maintain driver eligibility under CSU's Driving and Motor Vehicle Policy.
Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds. If lifting is over fifty (50) pounds, ability to buddy lift or use of tools to aid in lifting.
This position is classified as essential, meaning that the employee will be required to report to work during emergency situations, inclement weather, or other unforeseen circumstances that disrupt normal operations. Flexibility and the ability to work outside of regular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required as needed to ensure continuity of business operations.
Preferred Qualifications Associate degree, preferably in horticulture or related field.
Experience with snow removal attachment or deicer spreader, small hydraulic equipment and Bobcats.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of landscaping techniques, plant care, and operating grounds maintenance equipment.
Familiarity with sustainable landscaping practices and pest control methods.
Ability to work independently on projects that require one person and cooperatively with a team.
Ability to achieve and maintain highest standards of safety, quality, and efficiency.
Ability to meet deadlines and tackle emergencies and difficult situations.
Ability to troubleshoot problems, and the experience to propose and implement effective solutions.
Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to work as an individual contributor and an effective team member.
Ability to be dependable and punctual in reporting to work as scheduled.
Strong attention to detail, ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision while maintaining a high standard of safety and quality.
Ability to use appropriate hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment safely and effectively.
Proficient in use of digital and mobile (i.e. phone or tablet) maintenance work order systems, email, and messaging.
