This position works under the direction of the Public Works staff, operates one or more types of heavy equipment, and performs complex functions in street maintenance, waste collection, or horticulture services. This is a full-time role with a schedule of 40 hours per week (crews work 10 hours a day and 4 days a week from 7.00 a.m. - 5.30 p.m.).
Job Responsibilities:
Skilled in or the ability to learn the proper procedures for operating various heavy motor equipment, including backhoes, mowers, compactors, front-end loaders, heavy rollers, excavators, tub grinders, hydro-excavators, waste collection equipment, street sweepers, paving equipment, etc. Operate snow removal equipment for roadways, sidewalks, and parking lots. Identify and document when equipment is due for periodic service or is in need of repair. Keeps daily records regarding the use and servicing of motor equipment; reports any problems to appropriate personnel. Supervises and assists in the daily truck loading and unloading and the organization of assigned tasks for Maintenance Workers, Groundskeepers, and other staff. Work independently or as part of a team in the performance of street maintenance, horticulture management, and waste collection services. Repair and patch streets, sidewalks, and curbs. Rebuild street inlets, and catch basins. Straightens and replaces miscellaneous signs; replaces traffic signal bulbs; installs barricades. Assists with waste collection; makes "special pick-up" waste collections; lifts and carries up to sixty (60) pounds at thirty (30) yards. Collects and processes brush for reuse, collects leaves, and provides roadside and park litter clean-up. Assist in planting and maintaining lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers in and around City parks, roadways, open spaces, and other City facilities (including edging, mulching, pruning, fertilizing, watering, grading, seeding, sodding, aerating, applying insecticides and herbicides, and mowing). Constructs and maintains playground equipment, tables, trash containers, benches, shelters, and pathways. Assist in training other employees as necessary. Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance. Perform maintenance activities such as minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc. Skilled in or the ability to learn the proper procedures for all aspects of concrete installation and maintenance, including forming, pouring, and finishing. Understanding of the OUPS process and requirements. Must be available for after-hours call-ins for emergency activities. Examples are drainage, storm debris removal, snow/ice, etc. Other Duties and Responsibilities A valid CPR/First Aid certification may be obtained after employment. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. Two years of experience working outdoors. A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsements or the ability to obtain it within twelve (12) months of employment. Preferred Qualifications Specialized training in the operation of heavy equipment. Two years of experience operating heavy equipment. Previous experience using Waste collection equipment.
Knowledge of:
Safety practices and procedures. Heavy and medium-duty equipment maintenance. Proper lifting techniques; snow and ice removal.
Skill in:
Motor vehicle operation includes but is not limited to street maintenance equipment, waste collection equipment, and snowplow operation. Tools to maintain public infrastructure, equipment, and facilities. Snowplow operation. Asphalt preservation experience preferred. Concrete preservation experience preferred Ability to: Carry out detailed but basic written or oral instructions. Deal with problems involving several variables within a familiar context. Physical Demands and Work Environment:
