COMPETENCIES

Knowledge of methods and practices in gardening, nursery, and greenhouse operations Knowledge of the common ornamental and native varieties of flowers, shrubs, and trees, and their characteristics and growing periods Skill in cultivation and care of a variety of flowers, plants, and shrubs Knowledge of grounds-keeping and standard horticultural practices Ability to maintain records and communicate using Microsoft suite Ability to work independently and to make decisions based on city policy and standards Ability to identify plants and distinguish between blossom colors and shades. Ability to climb ladders up to 14 feet to do pruning and trimming.

Help maintain and enhance the beauty of parks and green spaces within the city Perform regular maintenance tasks such as weeding, pruning, planting, mulching, and watering plants and flowerbeds Assist in designing and implementing landscape plans, including selecting appropriate plants and arranging layouts Monitor plant health and growth, identifying and addressing pest and disease issues as needed Maintain and operate irrigation systems, ensuring efficient water usage Prepare gardens for seasonal changes, including planting seasonal flowers and preparing plants for winter Apply pesticides and fertilizers using both spray equipment and mechanical spreaders Maintain records of plant species, growth, and garden maintenance activities Participate in community gardening events and educational workshops as needed Seeds, plants, and transplants annuals, perennials, roses, shrubs, and trees Perform tree pruning and assist in tree removals Shear topiary shrubs and shrub hedges May assist in maintenance and operations of greenhouse facilities and/or plant and tree nursery Answer visitors' questions regarding plant names, characteristics, and care Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Required Experience:

• Two years of full-time equivalent experience in gardening, greenhouse/nursery operations, and/or landscape maintenance; knowledge of native plants and sustainable practices is an advantage

Required Credentials:

• High school diploma or equivalent; college degree or certification in horticulture, botany, or a related field preferred
• Possession of a valid driver's license
• Washington State Pesticide license; or ability to obtain a Public Operator license for pesticides from the Washington State Department of Agriculture within 3 months of appointment

PAID TIME OFF

City of Liberty Lake observes twelve (12) paid holidays, prorated based on hire date. Thirty-two (32) hours of floating holiday are provided each year; however, the hours are prorated based on the quarter hired for the first year. Employees accrue four (4) hours of paid vacation year pay period. Sick leave is frontloaded upon hire with forty (40) hours, after six (6) months employees will accrue four (4) hours per pay period.
