The Finishing Herdsman is responsible for providing daily care for the swine herd throughout the finishing production cycle under the direction of the Department Manager and Farm Manager. This position supports the health, welfare, and productivity of the herd while maintaining company biosecurity, animal welfare, sanitation, and safety standards. Schedule Monday through Friday, with every other weekend as required. Typical hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., subject to change based on operational needs and job duties. Essential Job Functions The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to: Provide daily care for the swine herd in accordance with company animal welfare standards. Move and handle animals using safe and humane animal handling practices. Load and unload pigs as scheduled. Monitor animal health and report concerns promptly to management. Promote herd wellness through proactive observation and care. Maintain clean and sanitary work areas. Follow all biosecurity protocols, including required shower-in/shower-out procedures and clothing changes. Work collaboratively with team members while also performing assigned tasks independently. Work rotating weekends and holidays as required by operational needs. Follow all company safety policies and procedures and promote a strong safety culture. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess: Must be at least 18 years of age. Animal care experience preferred but not required. Ability to work independently with limited supervision. Ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced work environment. Dependable and reliable. Strong attention to detail. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Flexibility to work a rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays. Reliable transportation to and from the worksite, which is located in a rural area. Work in close proximity to live animals that may move abruptly, resist handling, or behave unpredictably, requiring sustained attention and safe handling practices. Maintain awareness while working around livestock, equipment, and moving machinery. Use hands and arms for grasping, reaching, handling tools, gates, and equipment. Maintain balance and coordination while working on uneven, wet, or slippery surfaces. Work in agricultural environments, including exposure to dust and airborne particles, animal dander and odors, and noise from livestock and equipment. Work in varying temperatures and weather conditions, including heat and cold. Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all biosecurity and sanitation protocols. Maintain visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to observe animal health, identify hazards, and safely perform assigned tasks. Hear and communicate effectively, with or without reasonable accommodation, to receive instructions, communicate with coworkers, and respond to safety alerts. Work overtime or extended hours as needed to meet operational requirements.
