Job Description

Role Summary The Perennials Grower leads Wilson Plant Co.'s perennial program from seed to sale, working directly under our head grower to bring one of our most diverse and beloved plant categories to life. This role blends the technical precision of greenhouse growing with an investment in the customer experience, ensuring every perennial — from Kentucky natives to season-favorite cultivars — reaches our retail spaces healthy, well-timed, and ready to inspire. Through hands-on crop care, sound growing decisions, and close collaboration with our retail teams, this role cultivates both a thriving greenhouse section and the customer confidence that comes from really great plants. Role Responsibilities Crop Production & Plant Care Oversees the perennials section from sowing through finish, managing watering, fertilization, pest & disease control, and environmental conditions to produce healthy, vibrant crops Prepares containers, soil mixtures, and labels in a timely manner ensuring seeds, plugs, and cuttings are sown and transplanted according to the growing calendar Identifies and responds to plant health issues, discrepancies, or irregularities quickly, keeping the head grower informed and involved in problem-solving Maintains accurate records of crop timing, inputs, and production notes to support pricing & planning across future seasons Communicates effectively with vendors and head grower to keep the perennial selection inspiring, varied, and serving the needs of retail & wholesale customers Section Leadership & Crew Coordination Trains and guides greenhouse crew members on transplanting, spacing, watering, and fertilizer application specific to perennials and native plant material Reviews and prioritizes daily task lists with the head grower and oversees crew execution to ensure accurate, timely completion of section work Provides progress updates and offers recommendations that improve the quality, efficiency, and output of the perennials program Works independently to keep the section on schedule while collaborating closely with other section growers to serve the needs of the growing greenhouses as a whole Retail & Sales Support Coordinates the movement of finished perennials from our production greenhouse to retail spaces in both Frankfort and Lexington, ensuring plants arrive ready for an inspiring, well-stocked display Supports set-up, merchandising, and stocking of the perennials section in our retail greenhouses, keeping displays fresh and visually compelling Serves as a go-to resource for retail and sales teams, sharing plant knowledge that helps team members answer customer questions with confidence Communication & Cross-Department Collaboration Communicates openly with the head grower and fellow section growers about section status, crop timing, and any equipment or system issues affecting production Collaborates with retail leadership to align on timing, quantities, and presentation of perennials as they move from production to retail Contributes ideas and observations that help refine our growing programs and strengthen the perennials category year over year Role Qualifications 1-2 years of greenhouse grower or production horticulture experience is preferred; a horticulture background through education or hands-on experience is strongly valued Working knowledge of perennials, native plants, and their specific growing & care needs Basic understanding of IPM principles, including pest and disease identification and scouting Wilingness & ability to obtain a Kentucky Retail Pesticide Applicator's License within 90-days Moderate proficiency with basic computer programs, including Excel, for recordkeeping and reporting Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, lift & carry up to 50 lbs regularly in a greenhouse and outdoor environment Comfortable working in variable temperatures, including hot summer greenhouse conditions Availability for a weekend-heavy schedule during peak season with rotating weekends outside of peak What Makes This Role Different Real ownership over a category, not just a task list — your growing decisions show up on the retail floor Work alongside a head grower and section growers who actually want to talk shop, not just hit numbers A greenhouse growing position that sees the crops through the sale where you can actually share your passion directly with retail customers Horticulture, Greenhouse grower, perennials grower, section grower, assistant grower
