This hands-on role combines facilities project management, preventive maintenance and repairs, and support for camp program areas. The Camp Ranger works independently while coordinating contractors, volunteers, seasonal staff, and council leadership to keep the property safe, welcoming, compliant, and ready for campers and guests. This position is well suited to a practical problem-solver who enjoys varied work, takes pride in stewardship, and knows when a task can be completed in-house and when a licensed or specialized professional is required. The position is full-time and includes on-site housing. The regular schedule is generally established in advance but may flex for group use, special events, seasonal programs, projects, or facility emergencies. Limited on-call duties are shared with camping leadership. Facilities and Project Management Approximately 40 Percent Identify facility-development, repair, and maintenance needs and communicate priorities to the Facilities Manager. Coordinate contractors and vendors; prepare or obtain material and labor estimates; monitor project scope, cost, quality, progress, and completion. Manage, prioritize, assign, and close work orders in the council's digital maintenance system. Develop and carry out a proactive preventive-maintenance plan for buildings, grounds, vehicles, tools, utilities, and camp equipment. Organize and lead staff and volunteer service projects and workdays; assign and supervise maintenance duties as staffing allows. Maintain accurate inventories of tools, equipment, program materials, and supplies. Repairs Maintenance and Camp Readiness Approximately 40 Percent Perform routine repairs and troubleshooting in plumbing, carpentry, grounds, and other general facility systems within the Ranger's training and experience. Complete routine servicing and preventive maintenance, including filters, equipment checks, and documented inspections. Operate tractors, mowers, utility vehicles, chainsaws, shop tools, and related equipment safely and efficiently when trained and authorized. Prepare campsites, buildings, paths, and guest areas for use through grounds care, vegetation management, housekeeping, waste collection, and general setup. Investigate and triage maintenance concerns reported by staff and guests, respond to urgent hazards, and follow through to resolution. Support the safe operation and required recordkeeping of camp power, water, wastewater, sewage, kitchen, aquatic, and other facility systems as assigned. Keep buildings, grounds, storage areas, and shops clean, organized, secure, and in good working order. Program and Activity Support Approximately 20 Percent Work with program staff and qualified volunteer leaders to support safe, effective camp activities based on the Ranger's background, training, and certifications. Coordinate instructor readiness, training, and staffing for assigned program areas. Maintain awareness of and follow applicable Scouting America and camp activity protocols. Support inspection, setup, maintenance, and operation of developed activity areas. Current activities include the swimming pool, archery, and mountain biking; planned development includes firearm ranges and a COPE ropes course. Safety Compliance and Property Security Follow the Guide to Safe Scouting, National Camp Accreditation Program standards, council policies, and applicable local, state, and federal requirements. Maintain required logs, certifications, test results, and reports for water, wastewater, and other regulated systems; submit reports to agencies as assigned. Coordinate professionally with fire, emergency medical services, law enforcement, sanitation, and other public agencies when needed. Conduct property and safety patrols, identify and correct hazards, enforce camp policies, and help maintain site security. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and ensure staff and volunteers follow safe work practices. Administration Leadership and Service Supervise, mentor, and coordinate volunteers and seasonal maintenance staff. Build positive relationships with Scouts, families, guests, neighbors, volunteers, contractors, and community partners. Recruit and coordinate volunteer labor for priority projects and scheduled workdays. Use council systems for reservations, maintenance tracking, communication, and timekeeping. Submit accurate and timely purchasing, petty-cash, mileage, and business-expense records; follow approval requirements for overtime and leave. Assist with broader council camping and facility operations as assigned and serve as a visible ambassador of Scouting values. High school diploma, AA Degree or Military experience a plus At least 21 years of age. Valid CA driver's license Broad working familiarity with several building or property trades, such as carpentry, grounds maintenance, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. Sound judgment about personal skill limits and when to engage a licensed or specialized trades professional. Strong organization, prioritization, follow-through, and the ability to manage multiple tasks with limited supervision. Effective written, verbal, and technical communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with youth, adults, volunteers, contractors, and people with varied abilities and backgrounds. Ability to perform physical work in varied weather conditions, lift and carry at least 50 pounds, and work overhead or at heights with appropriate training and equipment. Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends, holidays, special events, and limited on-call coverage. Ability to become a registered member of Scouting America and complete required youth-protection, safety, and National Camp School Ranger training. Preferred Qualifications Five or more years of experience in general construction, facilities maintenance, or a skilled trade; relevant education may be considered with experience. At least one year of management, supervisory, project-coordination, or volunteer-leadership experience. Water-system management experience and a current applicable certification. Experience with preventive-maintenance or work-order software and comfort using Microsoft Office and other digital systems. Bilingual English and Spanish communication skills. Experience with Scouting America, camp operations, outdoor education, environmental conservation, or youth development.
