Job Description

Position Summary This position will be part of a multi-person Burn crew, working on Wildlife Management Area conservation projects throughout Southeast Georgia. The top priorities are activities associated with prescribed burning, including firebreak construction, fuel reduction, burn operations, and postburn monitoring. Another priority is longleaf pine forest restoration, including tree planting an invasive species removal. The crew will be involved with habitat enhancement for game species, exotic and invasive species management, and native species plantings, basic Land Management activities, assisting in sensitive endangered species recovery this position will focus on coastal lands, with opportunities to assist on statewide projects. Hosting Organization Georgia Department of Natural Resources Location Brunswick, GA This position is primarily in a front country setting where emergency services are accessible, but may be delayed by 1-2 hours. Schedule January 4, 2027 - April 23, 2027 Key Duties and Responsibilities All aspects of prescribed fire application, including equipment maintenance, fire line preparation, control line ignition, interior ignition, fire containment strategies, mop up requirements, and postburn monitoring. Marginal Duties Additional duties will include longleaf pine forest reforestation activities, living facilities maintenance, living facilities grounds maintenance and fire equipment repairs and enhancements. Additional biological survey work may be available to those with an interest in the experience Required Qualifications A strong desire to be in the outdoors in variable conditions is a must for this position. Members must be 18+ years of age. Candidates not currently Red Card certified will be required to complete approximately 47 hours of National Wildfire Coordination Group online training PRIOR to beginning their internship. Interns will be required to go through additional training including coursework, exam, and the Aruduous Pack Test immediately upon the start of the program. Candidates with current Red Card certification must provide current documentation and may be required to attend an annual refresher. Preferred Qualifications Correct Red Card certification, prior hand tool experience, prior chainsaw experience. Prior experience with ecological restoration projects, environmental monitoring and habitat maintenance are desirable. Working Conditions Work schedules and projects may change on short notice or be ambiguous.;Work settings require the ability to positively interact with people of varying perspectives.;Work settings may be located in natural environments and regionally significant locations that require respect for the land and local peoples.;Work environment may be in inclement and severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and flash flooding, gusty and strong winds, foggy or decreased visibility, lightning events, and/or decreased or inclement air quality conditions due to wildfire smoke or smog.;Work settings may involve exposure to natural and environmental hazards, such as poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac; harmful, poisonous, or disease-carrying ticks, mosquitos, insects, snakes, bears, and other wildlife. Hours 40 per week Living Accommodations Shared housing is provided for this position, including shared kitchens restrooms and living spaces. Compensation Living allowance - $520 per week; One time relocation travel up to $650; Up to $250 reimbursement for Fire Boots. All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes. Personal Vehicle Information Driving Driving is not required
