ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT
The Environmental Management Department aims to protect, preserve, and enhance the public health, safety, and environment through a balanced program of environmental monitoring and enforcement, innovative leadership, community education, customer service, and emergency response for the citizens of and the visitors to El Dorado County.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Join our team as a Vector Control Technician and make a meaningful impact in your community by helping protect public health and safety. In this role, you will implement plans to control and eliminate harmful insect infestations throughout the County, assist with identifying vector-borne diseases and applying effective control practices, and support the calibration and maintenance of specialized equipment as well as the upkeep of vector control facilities. If you're looking for hands-on work that directly supports the well-being of your community, this is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to: Identify and inspect areas prone to mosquito infestations; collect samples and analyze mosquito types. Perform physical control at infestation sites by digging drainage ditches, removing beaver dams, or other obstacles to drainage. Calibrate and maintain spray equipment, mix chemicals, and operate manual and power spray equipment to apply pesticides. Collects samples from dead birds and mammals for vector-borne diseases. Respond to calls from the public regarding yellow jacket nests and infestations; collect samples and recommend methods of treatment, and use appropriate safety equipment, including a bee suit; treat the nesting area using liquid spray or dusting pesticide. Set live traps for rodents, anesthetize animals, and collect fleas by brushing the animal; take blood samples and release animal; send samples to Sacramento to test for the presence of plague; implement flea control program by setting bait stations, and spraying and dusting den areas. Education and Experience:
Any combination of the required experience, education, and training that would provide the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
Vector Control Technician I :
Equivalent to graduation from high school, and one (1) year of experience in grounds keeping or gardening, which included the safe application of pesticides.
Vector Control Technician II :
Equivalent to graduation from high school, and one (1) year of experience in vector control at a level equivalent to the County's class of Vector Control Technician I.
Licenses and Certifications:
Vector Control Technician I and II Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Driver's License by time of appointment and a satisfactory driving record. Within one year of employment, must obtain State of California, Department of Public Health certification A- Mosquito Control Technician through the California Department of Health Services. Vector Control Technician II Possession of State of California, Department of Public Health, certifications in B-Mosquito Control, C- Terrestrial Invertebrate Vector Control, and D-Vertebrate Vector Control at the II-level is desirable. Ability to obtain continuing education units every two (2) years (according to the training cycle) as governed by the California Vector Control Technical Certification and Training Program Guidelines.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The County of El Dorado is recruiting applicants for Vector Control Technician I/II. This recruitment will establish a list for the purpose of filling current and future full time, part time, limited term and extra help vacancies for at least three (3) months. In accordance with Personnel Rules 1103.1 and 1105.1, an extra help or limited term employee may be transitioned into a regular employee if the department in which the employee works has a vacant allocated position for the same classification as held by the extra help or limited term employee and the appointing authority requests such transfer. We currently have the following vacancies: One (1) Limited Term vacancy in the Environmental Management Department located in South Lake Tahoe, CA . Limited term appointments are at-will appointments in the unclassified service that unless earlier terminated, terminate automatically at the end of the specific project for which the appointment is made. The current vacancy is anticipated to end 06/30/2026. Depending on program needs and with Board approval, the term may be considered for extension in the future, although this is not guaranteed. Employees serving under a limited term appointment receive benefits (health, retirement, and paid leave benefits) but are not considered regular employees. Two (2) Extra Help vacancies in the Environmental Management Department, one located in Placerville and one based in South Lake Tahoe , CA. Extra help vacancies are made to maintain adequate coverage of work for short periods of time at frequent intervals, where employment is of a recurrent nature depending on the needs of the Agency; work may be seasonal, on-call, and/or for a limited duration. Extra help employees are not considered regular employees, therefore do not attain civil service status, and do not receive benefits or paid leaves; however, they do accrue sick leave consistent with the law.
