To maintain city trees utilizing accepted horticultural practices.

Essential Responsibilities:

Climbs trees to reach branches interfering with wires and transmission towers, using climbing equipment. Prunes treetops, using saws or pruning shears. Repairs trees damaged by storm or lightning by trimming jagged stumps and painting them to prevent bleeding of sap. Removes broken limbs from wires, using hooked extension pole. Fells trees interfering with City property, using chain saw. May work from bucket of extended truck boom to reach limbs. Operates heavy equipment such as hydraulic buckets and booms, stump grinder, chipper, backhoe and front end loaders. Makes minor repairs to equipment, performs preventative maintenance. Cleans buildings, washes windows, and empties trash cans, using brooms and cleaning supplies. Paints interior and exterior walls and trim using paint and painting tools. Drives truck and loads fallen tree limbs and roadside trash onto truck, and delivers refuse to designated area. Operates snow removal equipment to maintain streets, sidewalks and driveways. Does related work as required. Responds to emergency calls and complaints. Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and holidays . Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in division. Ability to understand and communicate written instructions. Ability to use computers to enter daily work assignments and update tree inventory. Related and other duties as required. Responsible to self-initiate activities consistent with the City of Sandusky's and department's goals and objectives. Must report for work at required time and date and maintain a responsible attendance record. The ability to follow a supervisor's instructions, tolerate certain levels of stress, and attend work on a punctual, regular basis. The avoidance of violent behavior that threatens the safety of other employees.

Skills and Abilities:

Work outside for long periods of time and in all kinds of weather, performing tasks that require physical strength and endurance. Follow instructions exactly. Adjust to doing the same kind of work all day long or performing a variety of different tasks on the same day, depending on daily business needs. Work quickly and skillfully with your hands to do such things sawing or sorting logs, or operating tractors or lawn mowers.

Specific Vocational Preparation:

Specific Vocational Preparation includes an occupationally significant combination of: vocational education, apprentice training, in-plant training, on-the-job training, or essential experience in less responsible jobs which lead to the higher job or serving in other jobs. Over three months and including six months. To do this job, you must have the following licenses or certifications before being hired: Valid Ohio Commercial Drivers License and all applicable endorsements or must obtain one within 480 working hours. To do this job, you must have the following amount of total education and/or experience: High School Diploma Not less than two (2) years experience in tree trimming including two (2) years in construction and operation of heavy equipment or, an equivalent level of educati on and experience.
