Job Description

Scope of Position:
The Animal Care Giver - PT is a vital member of the HSJC team and offers a rare chance to work with animals; save thousands of lives; help rehabilitate the lost, injured, and abused; and provide direct care for the shelter's animals from intake to adoption. It is a part-time position, averaging 18-24 hours per week. Weekend availability is a must. The Animal Care Giver maintains a commitment to the HSJC philosophies and policies in the performance of his/her duties.
Responsibilities:
The Animal Care Giver responsibilities include but are not limited to: Provide daily care of the wellbeing of all shelter animals, including feeding, watering, monitoring health, and assessing animal behavior, providing enrichment and cleaning. Clean and disinfect all cages and kennels according to established guidelines. Exercise caution when handling animals and seek help when necessary. Ensure all animals are safe and secure when cleaning is finished. Provide daily enrichment, exercise, and behavior care to the shelter animals in accordance with established guidelines and protocols. Communicate all issues regarding health and behavior of shelter animals to the Shelter Manager, or in their absence, to the
Executive Director:
Monitor and review the health of animals and report concerns as necessary. Safely handle animals and communicate their behaviors when interacting with the public. Safely handle and care for bite-risk and quarantine animals according to established guidelines. Assist with animal intake and adoptions. Assist with stray pick-ups and/or transports as scheduled during shelter business hours. Transport animals to medical appointments and/or adoption sites. Assist with shelter maintenance, laundry, and cleaning activities. Sort, stock, and monitor inventory and donations. In collaboration with the Volunteer Program Coordinator and Assistant, support volunteers in learning and/or completing their basic assigned shelter activities. Assist the Shelter Manager to work on various shelter programs, i.e., the Foster Program or other projects as assigned. Support the shelter's fundraising activities and events.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED requested Possess a Valid Driver's License. Ability to work flexible hours.
Skills:
Compassion and empathy for animals and human clients. Confidence and skill in handling of all companion animals, including but not limited to dogs and cats. Demonstrates a high level of work standards and work ethics: treats people and animals with respect, keeps commitments, inspires the trust of others, works with integrity, and ethically upholds organizational mission & values. Ability to understand, provide, and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to cope with the emotional demands of the position including the support of animal abuse cases, euthanasia, and public interaction. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Multitasking and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and keep a cool head during fast-paced days. Work Environment /
Physical Demands:
The shelter's work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the responsibilities of their job. Safety procedures must be adhered to without exception: Exposure to dogs and cats of all sizes and varying degrees of behavior and/or medical conditions. There may be occasional wet floors, animal noises, and odors. Exposure to animal waste and common allergens. Most time will be spent indoors in a typical air-conditioned and heated environment; with daily exposure to outdoor walking and/or enrichment exercises as considered appropriate for the respective animal. Able to reach, stand, sit, kneel, crouch, lift and carry animals, equipment, and supplies in excess of 50 pounds.
