Animal Shelter Attendant / Animal Control Officer (ACO Trainee)

Position Summary The Charles City County Sheriff's Office is seeking a motivated and dependable individual to serve as a full-time Animal Shelter Attendant with the opportunity to develop into an Animal Control Officer (ACO). This position's primary responsibility is the daily operation and care of animals housed at the county shelter. The selected candidate will also attend Animal Control Officer training and gradually assume ACO-related duties, including field response and enforcement support. This position requires flexibility, professionalism, and a willingness to serve both the animals and the community. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Ø Animal Shelter Attendant (Primary Role) Ø Provide daily care for all animals in the shelter, including feeding, watering, cleaning, and monitoring health and behavior Ø Clean and maintain kennels, cages, equipment, and shelter facilities to ensure a safe and sanitary environment Ø Observe animals for signs of illness, injury, or behavioral concerns and report findings Ø Assist with intake and release of animals, including documentation and recordkeeping Ø Interact with the public in a professional manner regarding lost/found pets, adoptions, and general inquiries Ø Assist with transporting animals as needed Animal Control Officer (Secondary / Developing Role) Ø Attend and successfully complete Animal Control Officer (ACO) certification/training Ø Assist with animal-related calls for service under supervision Ø Respond to complaints involving stray, dangerous, or nuisance animals Ø Support enforcement of county ordinances and state laws related to animal control Ø Prepare reports and maintain accurate records related to incidents and enforcement actions Ø Assist when animal-related issues arise during law enforcement operations Ø On-Call Responsibilities (once Animal Control Officer Certified) Ø Must be available for on-call rotation, including nights, weekends, and holidays Ø Respond to emergency calls involving animals (injured animals, aggressive animals, etc.) Ø Maintain readiness to respond within a reasonable timeframe when on call Minimum Qualifications Ø High school diploma or GED Ø Valid Virginia driver's license with acceptable driving record Ø Ability to work independently and as part of a team Ø Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ø Ability to handle animals safely and humanely Preferred Qualifications Ø Prior experience working with animals, shelters, veterinary clinics, or agriculture Ø Interest in law enforcement or public safety career paths Ø Basic knowledge of animal behavior and care Physical Requirements Ø Ability to lift and carry animals (up to 75 lbs. with assistance) Ø Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work outdoors in various weather conditions Ø Ability to safely handle animals of various sizes and temperaments Working Conditions Ø Work is performed in both indoor (animal shelter) and outdoor environments Ø Exposure to noise, odors, and potentially aggressive or distressed animals Ø May be exposed to hazardous conditions or biohazards Training Requirements Ø Must successfully attend and complete Animal Control Officer (ACO) School within a designated timeframe Ø Ongoing training as required by the Sheriff's Office and Commonwealth of Virginia Compensation & Benefits Ø Virginia Retirement System (VRS) participation Ø Health, dental, and vision insurance Ø PTO and Holiday Leave Additional Information This position offers a unique opportunity to transition from a shelter-based role into a field-oriented public safety position.
