WHAT IT'S LIKE AS A STUDIO MANAGER

This role is designed for a practicing architect who leads by doing. The Studio Manager owns one to two projects as the primary Senior Project Architect and, in doing so, models the standard for design quality, documentation discipline, and client engagement that the broader studio follows. As much as this appears to be a production role, it's primarily a leadership one. The Studio Manager creates natural opportunities for staff to learn by working alongside them on real projects: reviewing drawings, solving problems together, and raising the floor of the entire team through consistent example. Studio-wide oversight, coaching, and process development layer on top of this core, with the expectation that the balance shifts progressively towards more official studio leadership over time (as outlined by the italicized notes within each section below). This is the Studio Manager's studio to run. Once fully onboarded, the Studio Manager leads with substantial day-to-day autonomy over the studio and their own projects… this is not a role that waits on approval to act. The VP of Preconstruction is a hands-on partner and resource at every stage, especially through onboarding and the early build of trust, and holds final say on scope, staffing, compensation, and firm-wide strategy. The two roles are built to balance each other's strengths, not stack in a hierarchy: the VP anchors firm-wide continuity, and the Studio Manager owns daily studio leadership and technical direction. Studio-wide matters, such as drawing quality, standards, and coordination with Construction, are priorities the two tackle together; never problems handed off for the Studio Manager to solve alone. ___________________________________________________________________________

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Lead the studio by example. Setting a visible, daily standard for technical rigor, professional conduct, and design intent. Provide regular design and documentation guidance to Project Architects and Staff Architects across the studio. Leads one to two projects as the practicing Senior Project Architect, maintaining direct ownership of schedule, client communication, and drawing quality. Identify development needs and provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and constructive accountability. Support consistent use of BSD's drawing standards, checklists, and production workflows. Manage the day-to-day operations of the architectural studio, including workload awareness, scheduling, and team rhythm. Longer range workload awareness coordinated by VP of Preconstruction Conduct hiring interviews and drive onboarding for incoming architectural staff, as supported by VP of Preconstruction ___________________________________________________________________________

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, AND REQUIREMENTS

Professional degree in Architecture (B.Arch. or M.Arch.) required. Licensed Architect preferred; licensure strongly encouraged if not already licensed. 10+ years of professional architectural experience, including high-end residential work. Prior experience leading or mentoring architectural teams strongly preferred. Fluent in construction documents, detailing, and consultant coordination. Strong understanding of residential construction methods and sequencing. Strong communicator with the ability to lead, mentor, and provide constructive feedback. Senior level architectural expertise with strong technical and documentation skills. ___________________________________________________________________________

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

We believe in rewarding hard work and dedication. The starting salary for this position is $120,000 or more annually, based on experience and qualifications.
