Job Title:
Job CaptainJob Description The Job Captain will support the design and delivery of complex architectural projects from schematic design through construction administration. This position is ideal for a technically strong architect who thrives in a collaborative, design-driven studio and is comfortable owning project documentation while coordinating closely with internal teams and external consultants. The role combines hands-on production of construction documents with leadership in coordination, quality control, and mentoring of junior staff. Responsibilities + Lead the development of complete, coordinated construction documentation sets across multiple project phases, from schematic design through construction administration. + Translate design intent into clear, accurate, and buildable drawings and details that support project goals and quality standards. + Prepare, revise, and manage drawing sets, details, and specifications, serving as a key technical resource for the project team. + Coordinate regularly with project managers, principals, and consultants to ensure alignment on project scope, schedule, budget, and technical requirements. + Participate in zoning and building code compliance reviews and support agency submissions and approvals, particularly within NYC processes. + Respond to RFIs, submittals, and field issues during construction administration, providing timely and well-documented resolutions. + Maintain consistency, organization, and accuracy across all project deliverables, including digital files and documentation standards. + Support project budgeting and planning by providing input on scope, phasing, and documentation requirements. + Manage and mentor junior staff, delegating tasks, reviewing work, and supporting their professional development. + Coordinate with structural, MEP, and specialty consultants to integrate their work into cohesive architectural documents. + Work across multiple project phases and project types, balancing deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced studio environment. + Contribute to a collaborative, idea-driven culture by actively participating in design discussions and team problem-solving. Essential Skills + Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture. + 7+ years of professional experience in an architectural office. + Strong experience producing construction documents for mid- to large-scale projects. + Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit, with the ability to use both in daily project work. + Experience with architectural design, design development, and construction documentation, including construction drawings and details. + Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor junior staff within a project team. + Experience with project management tasks such as scheduling, budgeting support, and coordination across project phases. + Solid understanding of NYC Building Code, zoning, and agency processes. + Experience coordinating with structural, MEP, and specialty consultants. + Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage deadlines and work across multiple projects or phases simultaneously. + Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a studio environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience in theater, performance, cultural, museum, or exhibit design is highly desirable. + Background in projects related to performing arts, media, broadcast, or real estate development is a plus. + Proficiency in Rhino and general CAD tools in addition to Revit and AutoCAD. + Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus. + Demonstrated leadership capabilities and a collaborative working style. + Interest in working on a variety of project types without being limited to a single building type or role. Work Environment The role is based in a small, collaborative studio located in the Soho neighborhood, with an open office layout that encourages close, one-on-one collaboration and open exchange of ideas. The studio operates in a design-driven, detail-focused environment where team members are encouraged to contribute creatively and are not confined to narrow roles. The standard schedule is built around an 8-hour workday within a 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. window, with a hybrid arrangement that typically includes remote work on Monday and Friday and in-office collaboration on three days per week. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New York, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $31.00 - $36.05/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
