Description We are seeking qualified candidates for Roadway Technician I or II position. Minimally supervised, performs heavy manual labor, drives truck and operates other equipment to maintain county roads, drives truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose material such as sand, gravel, crushed rock, bituminous paving materials, concrete finishing and concrete forming. Also functions as a construction technician performing routine surveying and construction inspection duties. Essential Duties Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location in order to perform assigned tasks. Performs snow removal activities, including plowing, sanding, and applying deicing materials to roads. Operates county equipment as necessary including hand and power tools, air compressor and jack hammer. Erects and maintains road signs, erects and dismantles barricades. Drives tractor mower attachment to cut grass and weeds. Performs traffic flagging duties to safely direct vehicles and equipment through work zones. Performs a variety of manual labor and other duties as directed, including construction forming steel, concrete placement, and asphalt patching. Performs tests on concrete, checks mat temperature and yield on asphalt projects, performs gradations, witnesses, collects and measures samples of construction materials. Measure distances to verify accuracy of dimensions of layout and installations, verify levels, alignment and elevations of installations, using total station, GPS, and level. Interprets construction plans and specifications, to ensure project is built in conformance. Maintains daily logs of construction inspections activities and compiles progress reports and observes work in progress to ensure procedures are followed and the materials used conform to specifications. Obtains field data necessary for design and maintenance of roadways, bridges, water resources, site development boundary surveying, and other items. Other duties as assigned.
ROADWAY TECHNICIAN II - ADDITIONAL DUTIES
: Performs duties of the Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) plant inspector including review of plant reports; monitor collection of aggregate belt samples and asphalt cement samples, perform aggregate monitor gradations, verify mix temperatures, and verify aggregate moisture content. Performs duties of the Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) plant inspector including reviewing plant reports, performing aggregate monitor gradations and testing field concrete samples.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervision is received from Road Superintendent, Road Foreman, Assistant Engineer and Project Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
No Functional or administrative supervision is exercised over support staff. Qualifications Must meet Secondary Roads residency requirements within 6 months of hire date: reside within a 45-minute response time, in normal fair weather driving conditions, from the Longfellow shop, located at 1329 Longfellow Ave, Waterloo. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Six (6) months or more related experience and/or training required. Must have and maintain a valid Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Type A and be insurable under the County's guidelines. Must have valid Iowa CDL Type A - Tanker Endorsement or able to obtain the endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire. Must obtain an Iowa DOT Certified Technician certificate for PCC I, Aggregate Technician and HMA Sampler within one year after employment with the Engineer's Department and must continue to keep them current. Must have general working knowledge of roadway construction and design. Must be proficient in computer software applications including Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and answer questions from county officials, co-workers and the public. Ability to interpret construction plans and specifications. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
ROADWAY TECHNICIAN II - ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
: Two (2) years or more related experience and/or training required. Must have an Iowa DOT Certified Technician certificate for PCC II Aggregate Technician and HMA I and must continue to keep them current.
