Summary:
The Cement Mason Trainee is an entry-level position designed to introduce the trade of cement masonry through structured, hands-on training under the direct supervision of experienced Cement Masons and Foremen. The Trainee assists with job site preparation, material handling, and the placement and finishing of concrete for sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, and roadways, while developing the skills, safety habits, and trade knowledge needed to advance toward a full Cement Mason role.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in preparing job sites, including setting up safety barricades, cones, and signage, and erecting and bracing forms and scaffolding,
- Load, unload, and transport tools, materials, and equipment to and from job sites,
- Assist in mixing cement, mortar, and other materials to the proper consistency and specifications,
- Assist in pouring, spreading, and leveling concrete for sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, and roadways,
- Learn to safely operate hand and power tools, including trowels, floats, edgers, screeds, power trowels, and saws,
- Assist in finishing concrete surfaces to specified textures, grades, and tolerances.
- Learn to read basic blueprints, grade stakes, and job specifications under the guidance of a supervisor,
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including proper storage and care of tools and equipment,
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and job site safety protocols at all times,
- Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times on the job site,
- Attend required safety trainings, toolbox talks, and on-the-job instruction sessions May be required to work extended hours including evenings, nights, and weekends, Additional duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years old, Must be a current DC resident, Must have the ability to work independently and as a part of a team, Less than one (1) year of construction experience, High school diploma or equivalency desired, Must have a positive attitude and work ethic, Must be able to successfully pass a background and drug screening.
Working Conditions:
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50-90 pounds continuously throughout the workday,
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, squat, and twist, throughout the workday for extended time,
- Ability to work on uneven, unstable, or slippery ground and surfaces,
- The ability to stand for extended periods of time and the constant use of hands and arms,
- This job requires the ability to see, whether naturally or with vision correction tools (e.g., glasses, contact lenses),
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain and snow,
- Exposure to hot materials, fuel, fumes, vapors, dust, grease and oils, as well as loud and/or constant noise moving equipment and vibration.
