The ideal candidate is a skilled mason who can both work with the tools and lead a crew, with experience in historic brick and stone restoration, repointing, selective masonry replacement, mortar removal, lime-based mortars, masonry cleaning, joint-profile matching, lintel and flashing installation, and architectural and structural repair of historic masonry. Responsibilities include leading small crews, planning daily work, maintaining production and quality standards, interpreting drawings and specifications, developing/replicating approved mockups, documenting unforeseen conditions, protecting historic materials in accordance with preservation best practices, and generating detailed daily work reports.
Candidates should demonstrate:
Strong brick, stone and historic repointing skills Knowledge of lime/NHL and traditional mortar systems Ability to recognize deterioration and inappropriate previous repairs Understanding of repair vs. replacement and protection of historic fabric Ability to read plans, specifications and restoration details Strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills Ability to train and mentor developing masons Commitment to safety, craftsmanship, reliability and accountability OSHA-30, Scaffold Competent Person, lift training, First Aid/CPR, and historic preservation training are preferred. This position is intended for an experienced preservation mason who takes pride in craftsmanship and is capable of leading others while remaining actively involved in the work. Duties Lead and supervise masonry crews in the execution of historic preservation projects, including stone masonry, bricklaying, plastering, stucco, and concrete work. Interpret construction plans, blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to ensure accurate implementation of restoration specifications. Oversee the installation of building materials Perform and supervise architectural and structural preservation and restoration activities. Build and maintain masonry scaffolding safely on site while adhering to all safety protocols; ensure team compliance with OSHA standards. Setup and operate aerial lifts and swing staging in accordance with OSHA requirements. Coordinate material procurement, estimate construction costs when needed, and manage project timelines efficiently. Conduct quality control inspections throughout each phase of work to ensure durability, aesthetic integrity, and adherence to historic preservation guidelines. Requirements Extensive experience in masonry with a focus on historic restoration projects; proven expertise in stone masonry, bricklaying, stucco, plastering, and concrete masonry. Strong knowledge of blueprint reading, interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and construction plans specific to historic structures. Skilled in construction materials estimating, material installation—including building materials like mortar mixes—and using hand tools and power tools safely. Ability to lead a team effectively while maintaining high safety standards; experience building masonry scaffolding and using other means of access is essential. Excellent understanding of safety protocols on construction sites; committed to maintaining a safe working environment at all times. Construction site experience with a focus on historic preservation or renovation projects; strong problem-solving skills for interpreting technical specifications. Valid experience in construction estimating and managing multiple aspects of complex projects from start to finish.
