Stone Mason Before You Apply — Physical Requirements This position is based outdoors. Work is performed in our stone yard and outdoor fabrication areas year-round, in Houston heat, humidity, cold, and rain. Candidates must be able to work outdoors for extended periods throughout the workday and must be able to regularly lift and carry 50 pounds, with heavier and oversized stone handled through team lifting or material-handling equipment. Please consider these requirements carefully before applying. Overview We are seeking a skilled, dependable Stone Mason to join our team. This is a hands-on position responsible for cutting, laying out, fabricating, and finishing reclaimed and antique stone, including limestone flooring, paving, mantels, fountains, columns, surrounds, and other architectural elements. The Mason will cut stone to size, lay out and dry-fit material for customer projects, fabricate and finish stone to match specifications and the character of antique material, and prepare finished pieces for shipment or installation. The role also supports the team with material handling, receiving, and day-to-day yard operations. This position is ideal for someone with a genuine feel for stone and craftsmanship, who enjoys physical work, takes pride in doing things correctly, and works well as part of a team. Our materials are heavy, often fragile, and valuable, so skilled workmanship, attention to detail, and safe material handling are essential. Duties & Responsibilities Cutting Stone Cut reclaimed and new stone to size using bridge saws, wet saws, angle grinders, chisels, and hand tools, working accurately to measurements, templates, and cut lists. Rip, crosscut, and trim flooring, paving, slabs, and blocks to specified dimensions and thicknesses. Cut miters, notches, curves, and profiles for mantels, surrounds, sills, treads, and custom elements. Maximize yield from antique material by planning cuts carefully and minimizing waste. Laying Out Stone Lay out and dry-fit stone flooring, paving, and wall elements on the yard floor according to customer plans, patterns, and square footage requirements. Sort and select stone by color, tone, texture, thickness, and condition to produce a balanced, natural blend across a project. Measure, mark, and number pieces so layouts can be reproduced accurately on site. Work from drawings, sketches, photos, and verbal instructions to interpret customer requirements and layout patterns such as opus, running bond, and random ashlar. Photograph, document, and label completed layouts for the sales team and customers. Fabricating & Finishing Stone Fabricate mantels, fountains, columns, surrounds, sinks, and other architectural pieces from reclaimed or new stone to specified dimensions. Apply and match finishes, including tumbling, honing, brushing, bush-hammering, chiseling, aging, and hand-distressing, to achieve the desired look or blend new work with antique material. Carve, tool, and detail edges, profiles, and surfaces by hand and with power tools. Repair, patch, fill, and stabilize damaged or worn antique stone while preserving its original character and patina. Inspect finished work for accuracy, quality, and consistency before it is released for shipment or installation. Material Handling & Yard Support Move, stage, stack, and store stone throughout the yard using pallet jacks, forklifts, cranes, dollies, clamps, and rigging as appropriate. Load and unload stone from trucks, containers, pallets, and storage areas. Assist with receiving incoming shipments and containers, including uncrating, inspecting, and sorting stone. Assist with order fulfillment, including locating, pulling, staging, counting, and preparing stone for shipment or customer pickup. Prepare stone samples for customers and the sales team, including cutting, finishing, labeling, and packing. Verify quantities and square footage when pulling, cutting, or moving material and report discrepancies to the team. Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas, including saw stations, fabrication areas, layout areas, and the yard. Safely operate and maintain saws, grinders, pneumatic tools, and hand tools, including blade changes and basic upkeep. Follow company procedures for safely handling heavy, fragile, and high-value architectural materials. Assist warehouse, inventory, and operations team members with additional tasks as needed. Follow all company safety procedures, wear required PPE at all times, and immediately report damaged materials, unsafe conditions, or equipment issues. Qualifications Previous experience as a stone mason, stone fabricator, stone cutter, hardscape or masonry installer, or in a similar trade required. Experience cutting stone with bridge saws, wet saws, and grinders. Experience laying out stone flooring, paving, or veneer, and an eye for blending color and tone across a project. Experience fabricating and finishing stone by hand and with power tools; experience aging or distressing new stone to match antique material is a strong plus. Experience working with reclaimed, antique, or salvaged stone is a strong plus. Ability to read a tape measure accurately, take precise measurements, and work from drawings, templates, sketches, and verbal instructions. Ability to accurately calculate square footage and count materials. Dependable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a team. Strong attention to detail and respect for the character of antique materials. Ability to work safely in a fast-paced outdoor yard environment around heavy equipment and moving loads. Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including heat and humidity. Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds and assist with heavier or oversized materials using team lifting or material-handling equipment. Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and perform physical work throughout the workday. Forklift or rigging experience is a plus. Spanish/English bilingual is a plus. Position Environment This is a hands-on skilled trade position based outdoors in our stone yard and fabrication areas. The majority of the workday will involve cutting, laying out, fabricating, and finishing stone, along with physical material handling, in an environment that includes water, dust, noise, and heavy loads. Appropriate PPE is provided and required. The successful candidate will be reliable, safety-conscious, organized, willing to learn, and ready to help wherever needed to keep customer projects moving and finished stone leaving the yard at the standard our clients expect.
