Job Description

The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill a vacancy for the position of Mason in the Roadway Division . The incumbent is engaged in a variety of construction activities, performing masonry duties and associated tasks. Performing a variety of skilled masonry work and associated tasks to include, laying brick, concrete, and asphalt for sidewalks, roadways, and retention structures Placing, smoothing, and finishing concrete cement surfaces Performing daily equipment and vehicle inspections Estimating the amount of materials need to perform a job Operating appropriate equipment to perform each planned jobs Loading and unloading required equipment Performing other related duties as assigned •City of Richmond Department of Public Works employees who perform duties in this class are considered essential employees and may be required to work during times of emergencies, natural disasters, and inclement weather. •
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or G.E.D. Two (2) years of masonry experience An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
Preferred Qualifications:
Masonry training will be provided for those candidates who have at least two (2) years of prior equipment operating or similar experience. Current certification and/or training as for certified mason or proof of apprenticeship Prior experience working with concrete, laying sidewalks, and/or working with asphalt desired At least two (2) years prior experience as an Equipment Operator Current and valid commercial driver's license (CDL) highly desired LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or
OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License initially or within six month of hire
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge (some combination of the following): Basic Mathematics Bricklaying and masonry principles and techniques Using masonry/construction tools and heavy equipment such as dump trucks, breakers, compressors, mixers, loaders, backhoes, concrete saws, etc. Skills (some combination of the following): Monitoring construction Effective oral and written communication Abilities (some combination of the following): Estimate/calculate time needed for repairs, from start to finish Use discretion in day-to-day work Think critically Exhibit good judgment and make decisions Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job. ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach extending hands and arms in any direction, stand, lift, finger (pick, pinch, type or otherwise work primarily with fingers), grasp applying pressure to an object with the fingers or palm, talk, see, and use substantial repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and fingers. The employee is occasionally required to hear, feel, walk, push, pull, and climb. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
