Technical Director Exemption Status:
Non-Exempt Position Summary The Scenic Carpenter builds, assembles, and installs physical sets for all productions at the Duluth Playhouse. Supervisory responsibilities The scenic carpenter assists in overseeing the work of volunteers, interns, and other staff as needed. Fabrication
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical sketches, and designer plans
  • Assist in planning the construction, load-in/out, and rigging of scenery
  • Build platforms, stairs, and custom props using wood, metal, foam, and a variety of other materials
  • Ensure all structures are safe, stable, and secure for actors and crew Collaboration with set designers
  • Work in close collaboration with the set designers and technical directors
  • Oversee Maintenance and supplies
  • Maintain and ensure the proper functioning of shop tools and equipment
  • Arrange for replacement of or repairs to equipment as needed
  • Maintain an updated inventory of tools and materials Qualifications Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of and ability to use hand and power tools
  • Ability to perform basic welding tasks
  • Knowledge of basic math skills/measurement techniques
  • Knowledge of basic construction methods
  • Must be able to read and write English Education and Experience
  • HS/GED required
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in carpentry Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to traverse and access all areas of the facility
  • Must be able to reach, stand, bend, twist, stoop, push, and pull repeatedly
  • Working conditions may include heat, cold, humidity, noise, and fumes from paints and other chemicals
