This position is intended for someone who has some construction, carpentry, maintenance, installation, or related hands-on experience and understands the basic expectations of working safely and productively on an active jobsite, but who is still developing the skills necessary to independently perform the full range of work expected of a Carpenter or Lead Carpenter. The Carpenter Assistant works primarily under the direction of a Lead Carpenter and Field Supervisor, assisting with rough and structural framing, drywall installation and finishing, insulation, ceilings, millwork, finish carpentry, doors, frames and hardware, selective demolition, repairs, punch-list work, tiling, light mechanical plumbing and electrical, and other general construction activities performed by the Decades field team. The Carpenter Assistant is expected to actively participate in their own development. This means asking appropriate questions, listening to instruction, accepting coaching, practicing new skills, learning from mistakes, and progressively becoming capable of completing more complex work with less supervision. While the Carpenter Assistant is not expected to know everything, they are expected to arrive prepared to work, demonstrate basic construction knowledge and mechanical aptitude, safely use common tools appropriate to their experience level, follow direction, maintain productivity, and show a genuine desire to learn the trade. Success in this position is demonstrated through continuous improvement. As skills and experience develop, the Carpenter Assistant should require less direct supervision, take responsibility for increasingly complex tasks, recognize quality expectations, anticipate basic job needs, and become a more productive and capable member of the Decades field team. Responsibilities Carpentry & Construction Support Structural wood and metal framing, interior and exterior Rough framing, insulation, blocking, backing, and drywall installation Drywall finishing and patching Acoustical and specialty ceilings Millwork, cabinetry, doors, frames, hardware, windows Finish carpentry, interior and exterior Wall protection and accessories Punch-list and repair work Selective demolition, including shoring and temporary protection Tile, grout, and waterproofing Installation of kitchen and bathroom accessories and fixtures Material handling, jobsite setup, daily cleaning Skill Development & Craftsmanship Learning how to read basic construction drawings and details. Developing accurate measuring and layout skills. Learning basic construction math, including fractions and material calculations. Developing proper use of levels, squares, tape measures, lasers, and layout tools. Learning rough and structural framing techniques. Developing drywall installation and finishing skills. Learning insulation installation requirements. Developing ceiling installation skills. Learning basic millwork and cabinetry installation. Developing finish carpentry skills. Learning door, frame, and hardware installation. Developing proper demolition techniques. Learning how different trades interact and how construction activities are sequenced. Learning appropriate material handling, storage, and protection practices. Developing an understanding of acceptable versus unacceptable workmanship. Learning how to identify basic field problems before they create rework. Developing the ability to independently complete increasingly complex assigned tasks. Production & Deadline Support Understand the assigned task and expected completion timeframe before beginning work. Follow the daily direction and priorities established by the Lead Carpenter or Field Supervisor. Communicate when additional instruction, materials, tools, information, or more work are needed. Notify the Lead Carpenter promptly when an issue is preventing assigned work from progressing. Assist with preparing materials, tools, equipment, and work areas for upcoming activities. Begin developing an understanding of what materials and tools will be needed for common tasks. Develop awareness of how individual work activities contribute to overall project deadlines. Quality Control Take responsibility for the quality of personally assigned work. Follow Decades' established quality expectations and the direction of the Lead Carpenter. Inspect personal work before presenting it as complete. Learn to recognize work that is plumb, level, square, properly aligned, securely fastened, clean, and professionally finished. Follow manufacturer instructions and installation requirements when provided. Ask questions when unsure of the required quality standard. Correct deficiencies identified by the Lead Carpenter or Field Supervisor. Accept quality corrections as part of the learning and development process. Apply lessons from previous corrections to future work. Protect completed work from damage. Maintain awareness of punch-list items and assist with timely completion. Strive to perform work correctly the first time and reduce preventable rework as skills develop. Safety & Jobsite Organization Perform all work in accordance with OSHA requirements and Decades safety policies, including wearing of appropriate PPE. Follow instructions regarding safe work practices. Understand the safe operation of tools before using them. Ask when unsure. Never operate equipment for which they have not been properly trained or authorized. Participate in required toolbox talks and safety meetings. Report unsafe conditions immediately to Lead Carpenter or Field Supervisor. Report incidents, injuries, near misses, damaged tools, and unsafe equipment promptly to Lead Carpenter or Field Supervisor to document. Maintain clean and organized work areas throughout the workday, including clear walking paths, proper tool storage, and overall cleanliness. Tools, Materials & Equipment Safely use basic hand tools appropriate to assigned work. Demonstrate basic familiarity with common power tools such as drills, impact drivers, circular saws, reciprocating saws, oscillating tools, and similar equipment. Receive training before using unfamiliar tools or equipment. Learn proper tool selection for different construction activities. Learn proper setup, adjustment, operation, and storage of tools. Inspect tools before use and report damaged or unsafe equipment. Maintain tools and equipment in good condition. Return tools to their appropriate location after use. Assist with loading, unloading, staging, organizing, and verifying materials. Handle materials carefully to prevent damage. Maintain organized material storage. Protect materials from weather, theft, or damage. Learn to identify common construction materials and their intended applications. Develop an understanding of material quantities and waste reduction. Maintain professional care of company vehicles, trailers, tools, and equipment. Requirements Minimum 18 years of age required Valid driver's license required with no provisional restrictions Reliable transportation to and from central office location Ability to travel between job sites Ability to perform physical work including lifting, carrying, bending, and standing for extended periods Ability to work outdoors and in residential or commercial environments 1-3 years of construction, carpentry, maintenance, installation, remodeling, facilities, or related hands-on experience preferred. Previous professional construction experience is preferred but demonstrated mechanical aptitude and relevant hands-on experience may be considered. Basic ability to use common construction hand tools safely. Basic familiarity with common power tools. Ability to accurately read and use a tape measure. Basic construction math skills, including fractions. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability and willingness to learn construction drawings, details, specifications, and project information. Ability and willingness to develop skills across rough carpentry, framing, drywall, ceilings, millwork, finish carpentry, doors, frames, hardware, and other general construction activities. Ability to work independently on basic assigned tasks after appropriate instruction while recognizing when assistance is required. Strong willingness to learn and accept coaching.
