Job Description

Carpenter — Residential Remodeling Dayspring Construction - 3.0 Portland, OR Job Details Part-time | Full-time $28 - $30 an hour 9 hours ago Qualifications Maintaining an organized workspace Door installation experience in residential renovation Door hardware installation Residential painting Interior fit-out carpentry Drywall repair Power tools for woodworking Residential construction experience Mid-level Renovation painting Deck building Trade school Outdoor structure carpentry Door trim installation Construction scheduling Tile flooring Construction site preparation Clean workspace maintenance Window installation Construction molding Demolition Full Job Description Dayspring Construction is looking for an experienced, hands-on carpenter to join our small residential remodeling crew. We're not looking for a project manager or someone to run the entire job site. We already have a site lead in place. We're looking for someone who knows their way around a remodel, owns some of their own everyday tools, can be given a task and get after it without constant supervision, and takes pride in leaving good work behind. A little different from a typical remodeling job Most of our work is on properties we own and renovate ourselves . That means you're not driving around doing service calls all day or constantly working around homeowners in occupied houses. The crew generally works together on substantial renovations and gets to see a house transform from demolition through completion. The work changes regularly. One week you might be framing and hanging doors. The next could involve cabinets, flooring, trim, drywall repairs or exterior work. If you enjoy actually building things and seeing a project come together , that's what we're trying to offer. What you'll be doing This is a hands-on position. Depending on the project, work may include: Demolition and site preparation General framing and framing repairs Installing doors and windows Cabinets and basic built-ins Baseboard, casing and other finish carpentry Flooring Drywall installation and repairs Painting and finishing Deck and exterior repairs Hardware and fixture installation Basic tile work Punch-list work and final details General problem-solving that comes with renovating older houses We don't expect you to be an expert in every trade. Licensed and specialty work is handled appropriately, and our site lead is there for larger decisions, planning and difficult problems. What we do expect is that if you're given a normal carpentry/remodeling task you know how to get started, use your judgment, ask when something doesn't look right, and get the work finished to a good standard. Who we're looking for This position will probably suit someone who has a few years of real residential construction or remodeling experience and has moved beyond apprentice level.
You should:
Be comfortable using common power and hand tools Own a reasonable set of your own everyday carpentry tools Have experience across several areas of residential remodeling Be able to work independently on familiar tasks Understand basic construction sequencing Measure accurately and pay attention to finish quality Be comfortable working alongside both more and less experienced crew members Be dependable and actually show up when you're scheduled Keep your work area reasonably clean and organized Have reliable transportation to Portland-area projects Be willing to obtain OSHA 10 and EPA Lead-Safe RRP certification if you don't already have them Formal trade school or a journeyman card isn't required. We're much more interested in what you can actually do. What you don't need to do You will not be expected to: Run the entire project Manage the construction budget Schedule every subcontractor Estimate whole-house renovations Manage the rest of the crew Know every trade Pretend you know something when you don't We'd rather have someone who says, "I've done plenty of doors and trim, but I haven't done that before. Show me once," than someone who claims to know everything. Pay and growth $28-$30/hour depending on experience and capability. This is a full-time W-2 position. Dayspring is growing, and we want people to have a clear path to earn more as they become more capable and independent. Our current crew includes people at different experience and responsibility levels, from apprentice through experienced carpenter and site lead. There is room for someone coming in at this level to develop into a higher-paid carpenter position as their skills and responsibility grow. We also have used discretionary project-performance bonuses so the team can share in successful projects. About Dayspring We're a young residential construction company building an internal team to renovate our own properties around the Portland area. Because we're still growing, this isn't a giant construction company where you're employee #137. You'll know the people you're working with, work directly alongside the crew, see the projects you're helping create, and have opportunities to learn from people with more experience. We care about good work, but we also care about practical construction: solving problems, keeping projects moving, spending money intelligently and getting houses finished. To apply Send us your resume and briefly answer these three questions: 1. What construction/remodeling work can you comfortably do on your own? 2. What tools do you personally own and normally bring to work? 3. Tell us about one recent project you worked on and what you personally did. Photos of your work are welcome. Please answer the three questions above when applying. Applications that only include a resume may not be considered.
