ABOUT VIKING DRILLING LLC
Viking Drilling LLC is a fiber optic drilling subcontractor working as the field execution layer between prime telecommunications contractors and on-the-ground crews. We work on large-scale FTTH builds across the Midwest for major national carriers. We are a lean, growing operation with strong prime contractor relationships and a clear path to scaling. We are looking for a Site Foreman who wants to get in early and grow with us long term.
  • THE ROLE
    This is a W-2 foreman position. You are Viking Drilling's boots on the ground. You will be the on-site authority on every job
  • reading plans, directing the crew, tracking footage, communicating daily with remote ownership, and ensuring the work gets done on time and to spec.
Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly preferred. The ability to communicate effectively with Spanish speaking crew members is a significant advantage in this role This is not a supervisory role where someone else is running the job. You own the site. You will report directly to the owner remotely. Ownership is not on site
  • you are the decision-maker in the field.
  • WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Read and interpret fiber optic construction blueprints including plan sheets, legends, bore path callouts, handhole placements, depth requirements, and easement notations
  • Direct a field crew through daily bore operations — HDD boring, conduit placement, handhole installation
  • Track production footage daily and submit daily reports to Company APP
  • Ensure all work is performed to plan spec, permit conditions, and depth requirements
  • Coordinate with prime contractor field representatives as needed
  • Call 811 and manage utility locate requirements before any excavation
  • Maintain job site safety and ensure traffic control is in place per permit requirements
  • Flag any field conditions that differ from the plan and communicate immediately to ownership
  • Submit daily production reports with footage, photos, and site conditions
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
Required:
  • Experience as a foreman or lead on fiber optic outside plant construction projects
  • Demonstrated ability to read fiber optic construction blueprints independently
  • Experience with HDD (horizontal directional drilling) bore operations
  • Ability to travel and work on-site for the duration of each project — hotel and per diem provided
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to the job site
  • Eligible to work in the United States (I-9 documentation required upon hire)
  • Strong communication skills — you will report to remote ownership daily via text, phone, and written reports
  • Ability to start imeediatly Preferred but not required :
  • Experience working with major national telecommunications prime contractors on large-scale FTTH or outside plant builds
  • Familiarity with MNDOT, IDOT, MDOT, or other Midwest DOT permit and depth requirements
  • FOA CFOS/O
    certification or equivalent outside plant fiber credential preferred but not required — field experience takes priority
  • Experience managing small crews (3-6 people) independently
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly preferred. The ability to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking crew members is a significant advantage in this role
  • EQUIPMENT
    Our crews operate HDD drill rigs, vacuum excavators, and standard outside plant fiber construction equipment. Familiarity with common HDD boring equipment and locating systems (such as Ditch Witch, Vermeer, or equivalent) is a plus. Candidates who have worked hands-on with bore crews rather than strictly in a supervisory capacity will stand out.
  • COMPENSATION
  • Day rate: $250
  • 350 per day depending on experience
  • Per-foot production supplement on applicable jobs, paid upon prime contractor verification of footage

  • WHAT THIS IS NOT
    This is not a local 9-to-5. This is a travel-based field role. You will be on job sites across the Midwest
  • Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Kansas
  • for the duration of each project. If you are not comfortable traveling and working independently without daily on-site supervision, this is not the right fit.
