Utility Superintendent
Job Description
Position Summary:
The Utilities Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising field operations for underground utility construction projects. This position oversees crews performing waterline, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, force main, pump/lift station, and related heavy-civil utility work. The Superintendent is responsible for ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, according to plans and specifications, and within established schedules and budgets Primary Responsibilities Supervise Foremen, operators, pipe layers, laborers, subcontractors, and other field personnel. Plan daily and weekly work activities and communicate production goals to crews. Oversee installation of water mains, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, force mains, manholes, services, structures, and related utilities. Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, profiles, details, and contract documents. Understand elevations, grades, slopes, pipe inverts, stationing, and utility layouts. Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, trucking, subcontractors, and deliveries. Work closely with Project Managers to maintain project schedules and production goals. Monitor daily production and identify issues that could affect project costs or schedules. Coordinate with owners, engineers, inspectors, municipalities, utility companies, and other contractors. Ensure work meets project specifications, NCDOT/municipal requirements, and applicable codes. Oversee testing, inspections, punch-list items, and project closeout. Identify conflicts with existing utilities and work with management to develop solutions. Assist with RFls, change-order documentation, extra-work tracking, and field measurements. Maintain accurate daily reports, including manpower, equipment, production, materials, delays, and jobsite conditions. Enforce company safety policies and OSHA requirements. Ensure proper trenching, shoring, excavation, confined-space, traffic-control, and competent-person procedures. Conduct or participate in toolbox talks and daily safety meetings. Maintain an organized, productive jobsite and hold crews accountable for quality and performance. Train and develop Foremen and other field personnel. Coordinate with the Project Manager/General Superintendent regarding upcoming manpower and equipment needs.
Qualifications:
Preferably 7-10+ years of underground utility/heavy-civil construction experience. At least 3-5 years of Foreman or Superintendent-level experience. Strong knowledge of water, sewer and storm-drainage construction. Ability to read civil construction plans and specifications. Thorough understanding of excavation, trenching, pipe installation, bedding, backfill and compaction. Ability to manage multiple crews and/or multiple projects. Strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills. Valid driver's license. OSHA 30 preferred. Trenching & Excavation Competent Person certification strongly preferred. NCDOT erosion-control certification/knowledge is a plus for highway and DOT-related work.
