POSITION SUMMARY
Under direct supervision, perform tasks involving physical labor for road construction projects, to include all phases of the project. May operate a variety of hand and power tools and other equipment including manlifts, pallet movers, and ATVs.
EDUCATION/TRAINING
High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred. One to five (1-5) years of directly related construction experience; or an equivalent combination of education, including apprenticeship program or vocational/technical school, and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed below.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Basic knowledge of and demonstrated experience with basic construction-type work. Basic understanding on operating a variety of equipment including hand and power tools. Familiarity with safe work practices and policies as well as safe driving rules and practices.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Ability to read and understand measuring tools and devices, warning signs and labels on a construction site. Ability to interpret plans, drawings, and written instructions and specifications. Ability to read and understand work orders and organize work with minimum supervision. Ability to work effectively and amicably with other people. Ability to hear and speak, to communicate in-person and over a telephone and/or radio. Ability to operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. Ability to work independently or in a team situation. Possess basic problem-solving and math skills.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to pass a pre-employment background check which includes 7-year employment verification, Department of Motor Vehicles record search, criminal record search, and verification of education, certifications, and licenses as applicable to the position. Ability to pass pre-employment and random drug screens. Must be available for regular standby assignments and work scheduled off-hours and emergency overtime as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
: Load, unload, and identify materials, machinery, and tools, and distribute them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans and specifications. Provide assistance to craft workers, such as carpenters, plasterers, and masons. Raze buildings and salvage useful materials. Read and interpret plans, instructions, and specifications to determine work activities. Spray materials such as water, sand, steam, vinyl, paint, or stucco through hoses to clean, coat, or seal surfaces. Tend pumps, compressors, and generators to provide power for tools, machinery, and equipment, or to heat and move materials. Lubricate and clean machinery, equipment, and tools. Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards. Control traffic passing near, in, and around work zones. Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes. Erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures. Identify, pack, and transport hazardous and/or radioactive materials. Mop, brush, or spread paints, cleaning solutions, or other compounds over surfaces to clean them or to provide protection. Operate jackhammers and drills to break up concrete or pavement. Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
MENTAL & COGNITIVE DEMANDS
Communication - ability to read and interpret maintenance and repair manuals; ability to write routine work orders; ability to communicate clearly and succinctly on a basic and technical level. Skills -basic construction aptitude. Basic skill operating a variety of equipment including hand and power tools. Reasoning - ability to solve practical problems; ability to interpret and understand a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform heavy physical work outdoors in all weather conditions and with exposure to potentially hazardous conditions. Use varied hand and power tools and move materials and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires regularly working in outside weather conditions. Regularly work near moving mechanical parts and frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. Occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and may require hearing protection.
