The Town of Mattapoisett is seeking a dedicated and hardworking individual to fill the position of Highway Laborer. This is a full-time union position within the Highway Department, reporting directly to the Highway Surveyor. We offer yearly cost of living and step increases, with opportunities for growth as you acquire additional licenses. Primary Responsibilities The successful candidate will perform scheduled and emergency maintenance for all town road and roadside projects. This includes the general upkeep of town properties, such as but not limited to:
Maintenance:
Parks, parking lots, athletic fields, beaches, wharves, and municipal buildings.
Road Work:
Repairing roads, manholes, catch basins, and drainage systems.
Materials Handling:
Raking, dumping, spreading, and rolling asphalt, cement, gravel, and stone.
Infrastructure:
Repairing or replacing guardrails, signs, lights, barriers, and fencing.
Snow Removal:
Operating trucks and equipment for roadway snow/ice removal and salting/sanding.
Site Safety:
Setting up traffic barricades, signals, and work zone controls to ensure safety standards are met.
Requirements & Qualifications Education:
High School diploma or proof of GED.
Experience:
At least two (2) years of public works or similar experience in construction, landscaping, or facilities maintenance is preferred.
Licensing:
Valid Massachusetts Driver's License which is to be submitted with employment application and must have or be able to obtain a 2A, 1C Hoisting License within 6 months of hire.
Skills:
Ability to operate various hand tools, power equipment (chainsaws, mowers, chippers), and heavy vehicles.
Availability:
Must be able to work the set 8.5-hour shift and required overtime for emergencies or seasonal needs which could include weekends, nights, holidays under varying conditions, including snow and ice operations as required.
Pre-Employment:
Will be required to pass a physical, drug screen, and CORI check all provided by the Town. Physical Demands & Environment This position involves strenuous physical labor in a variety of conditions:
Environment:
85% of work is performed outdoors in seasonal temperatures
Physical Strength:
Must be able to occasionally lift and carry up to 75 lbs and perform frequent pushing/pulling.
Mobility:
Extensive walking (60% of shift), standing, climbing, and bending is required.
Pay:
$21.55 - $23.58 per hour
