Job description: The Town of Palmer seeks a qualified candidate for a Grade 2 Laborer/Operator in the Department of Public Works. This position performs a variety of functions for the Highway Division, including routine manual work performing maintenance, repair and construction tasks. Responsibilities include the use and operation of a variety of motor vehicles and equipment, power tools and hand tools in support of the DPW Highway Division's construction and maintenance functions. Essential Functions Responsible for using and operating a variety of motor vehicles and equipment, power tools and hand tools in support of the maintenance of the Town's Highway Division Assists in pipe laying, road patching and performing manual labor required when digging and backfilling excavation Operates a variety of specialized light and heavy equipment/motor vehicles including dump trucks, graders, front end loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, asphalt rollers and other similar equipment. Assists in a variety of highway projects and repair projects such as repairing streets and sidewalks; installing, cleaning, and repairing culverts; building catch basins and drainage lines Performs street painting functions; sweeping streets; cuts and trims bush and trees Performs manual work in connection with snow and ice control programs with verifiable snowplowing and sanding work experience May assist other departments as directed Recommended Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. One to two years of light and heavy equipment operation and driving experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Possession of Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license Additional Requirements Valid Massachusetts CDL Class B motor vehicle license required Successful completion of Criminal Offense Record check
