Work may include concrete repair and tear out at times. Works under the direction of the Hard Surface Foreman or Crew Lead to complete asphalt tear-out, preparation, patching, and site restoration. Operates small tools and equipment safely while ensuring quality, safety, and production goals are achieved. Core Responsibilities Assist with site setup, including cones, signage, and traffic control. Perform asphalt tear-out using skid steer, mini excavator, or hand tools. Prepare subgrade and compact base materials to proper density. Place, rake, and compact hot mix asphalt for patches, aprons, and driveways. Perform saw cutting, edge preparation, and tack coating as required. Operate compactors and rollers safely under supervision. Maintain organized job sites and clean up debris after completion. Load, unload, and maintain equipment and tools. Support crew members and assist with concrete or restoration work as directed. Follow Universal Services' safety and quality standards at all times. Required Qualifications & Experience Valid driver's license and current DOT medical card preferred. 0-2 years of asphalt, restoration, or construction experience. Familiarity with hand tools, compactors, and small equipment. Ability to perform physical labor outdoors in all conditions. Dependable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented. Preferred Experience Experience with skid steer or mini excavator operation. Previous asphalt or paving work in utility or road construction. Knowledge of hot mix handling, placement, and compaction. Physical Demands & Competencies Lift, push, and pull up to 60 lbs. frequently. Work outdoors year-round in heat, cold, and variable conditions. Manual dexterity for hand tools and equipment operation. Exhibit teamwork, situational awareness, and attention to detail. Work Environment Outdoor job sites with exposure to asphalt fumes, noise, and active traffic. Work in residential, commercial, and public right-of-way areas. PPE required at all times per company policy. Work Schedule Full-time, non-exempt position; Monday-Friday with flexibility for overtime, evenings, or weekends as needed. Regular attendance and reliability are critical. Training & Development Expectations New Hire Development Complete Universal Services asphalt and safety onboarding within 90 days. Learn asphalt tear-out, compaction, and patching procedures. Demonstrate proper operation of small equipment and hand tools. Understand and apply Universal's safety and work-zone control procedures. Ongoing Development Participate in continued training for blacktop patching, finishing, and traffic control. Develop proficiency in skid steer and mini excavator operation. Demonstrate consistency, reliability, and initiative for advancement to Crew Lead level.
