PUBLIC WORKS LABORER
Pay:
$21.35 - $26.61 per hour Position Overview The City of Woodson Terrace is seeking a dependable, self-motivated, safety-conscious, and hardworking individual to join our Public Works Department as a Public Works Laborer . This full-time position performs a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled work involving the maintenance, repair, improvement, and upkeep of City streets, parks, public facilities, grounds, stormwater infrastructure, and other municipal property. The ideal candidate is someone who takes pride and ownership in their work , arrives prepared and ready to work, follows through on assigned responsibilities, and can remain productive without constant supervision. This position requires an individual who understands that safety is a responsibility shared by every member of the Public Works team and who consistently follows safe work practices, properly uses personal protective equipment, and recognizes and reports unsafe conditions. The successful candidate must be willing to work outdoors in changing weather conditions, operate a variety of vehicles and equipment, respond to emergencies and after-hours call-outs, and work cooperatively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and the public.

Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Rotating weekends; on-call for emergencies Key ResponsibilitiesStreet, Roadway & Infrastructure Maintenance
- Perform routine and emergency street maintenance, including pothole repair, patching, shoulder maintenance, and related roadway repairs.
- Assist with installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of traffic and street signs.
- Perform tree removal, brush removal, debris cleanup, and other work necessary to maintain City rights-of-way and public areas.
- Assist with construction, repair, and maintenance projects involving streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, curbs, and other municipal infrastructure.
- Identify and report roadway hazards, damaged infrastructure, drainage concerns, and other conditions requiring attention.
- Perform assigned work efficiently while maintaining proper safety procedures and protecting coworkers, residents, motorists, and the public. Snow & Ice Control
- Participate in snow and ice control operations during winter weather events.
- Safely operate dump trucks, snowplows, snow blowers, spreaders, and other snow removal equipment.
- Assist with clearing snow and treating streets, public facilities, sidewalks, and other areas as directed.
- Remain available for emergency snow and ice operations and other weather-related call-outs when required.
- Conduct equipment inspections and report mechanical or safety concerns before operating equipment. Equipment & Vehicle Maintenance
- May assist in the routine maintenance, cleaning, inspection, and minor repair of City vehicles, equipment, machinery, and tools.
- May assist in basic preventative maintenance and promptly report equipment problems or unsafe conditions to the appropriate supervisor.
- May assist in properly operating, cleaning, storing, and caring for City equipment and tools.
- May assist in mechanical repair and maintenance projects under the direction of qualified Public Works or maintenance personnel.
- Help ensure equipment is used only for its intended purpose and in accordance with manufacturer instructions and City safety procedures.
- Report damaged, malfunctioning, or unsafe equipment before it is placed into service. Stormwater & Drainage Maintenance
- Maintain stormwater facilities, including drainage basins, channels, swales, inlets, and related infrastructure.
- Remove debris, vegetation, and other obstructions that may interfere with proper drainage.
- Assist with inspections and maintenance designed to prevent flooding, erosion, and other drainage problems.
- Report damaged or deteriorated stormwater infrastructure and other potential problems to supervisors. Parks, Grounds & Recreation Facilities
- Inspect, clean, repair, and maintain City parks, playgrounds, athletic areas, recreational facilities, and surrounding grounds.
- Perform mowing, trimming, edging, weeding, fertilizing, brush removal, and general landscaping duties.
- Operate and maintain lawn and grounds equipment, including mowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and other power equipment.
- Identify potential safety hazards in parks and public areas and report or address them as appropriate.
- Help maintain City properties so they remain clean, attractive, functional, and safe for residents and visitors. Building & Facility Maintenance
- Perform general maintenance and repairs at City buildings and facilities.
- Assist with minor plumbing, carpentry, electrical, painting, fixture replacement, and other routine maintenance tasks.
- Inspect facilities and report maintenance issues, safety hazards, leaks, damage, or other conditions requiring attention.
- Assist with preparation, cleanup, repair, and maintenance associated with City events and activities. Utility & Sewer Operations
- Mark locations for utility line safety and comply with PA One Call requirements before performing applicable excavation or ground-disturbing activities.
- Respond to sewer-related call-outs and assist with investigation, maintenance, cleanup, and repair activities as needed.
- Follow established procedures when working around underground utilities, sewer systems, drainage systems, and other infrastructure.
- Use appropriate protective equipment and safety precautions when performing utility or sewer-related work. Equipment Operation & Work-Zone Safety
- Safely operate dump trucks, tractors, excavation equipment, snow equipment, mowers, power tools, hand tools, and other equipment used in Public Works operations.
- Perform daily or required safety inspections of vehicles and equipment before use.
- Perform flagging duties and properly establish and maintain safe work zones when working near traffic or in public areas.
- Follow traffic-control procedures and use appropriate warning devices, barricades, signage, and personal protective equipment.
- Immediately report unsafe equipment, hazardous conditions, accidents, injuries, or property damage. Customer Service & Teamwork
- Interact with residents, businesses, contractors, coworkers, and the general public in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner.
- Respond appropriately to questions and concerns from the public and refer issues to supervisors when necessary.
- Work cooperatively with other Public Works employees and City departments to complete projects and maintain City services.
- Communicate clearly with supervisors and coworkers regarding work assignments, progress, equipment problems, hazards, and other important information. General Responsibilities

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Missouri Class E Driver's License within 3 months of hire.
- Previous experience in Public Works, construction, landscaping, equipment operation, maintenance, or a related field is preferred but not required.
- Mechanical, equipment operation, construction, or maintenance experience is a plus.

- Pre-employment drug screening Work Environment Work is performed at the Public Works Building, municipal facilities, parks, streets, rights-of-way, drainage areas, and other locations throughout the City.
The position routinely involves outdoor work and exposure to changing and sometimes extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and varying visibility. Employees may also work in loud, dusty, dirty, wet, muddy, or otherwise challenging environments and around traffic, heavy equipment, machinery, utilities, and other potential hazards. Employees are expected to maintain constant awareness of their surroundings, follow established safety procedures, properly use required PPE, and take appropriate precautions to protect themselves, coworkers, residents, and the general public.
