The main responsibility of this position is to support the field crew through site preparation, hand digging, material handling, conduit placement, traffic control, cleanup, restoration, and other assigned labor activities. Previous machine operating experience is not required. The company will provide on the job training for the safe operation of mud vacuum systems, mini excavators, drills, skid steers, compactors, and other assigned construction equipment. Employees may operate equipment only after completing the required training and receiving company authorization. A valid standard driver's license is required. A Commercial Driver's License is not required for this position. Core Responsibilities Perform general labor duties, including site preparation, hand digging, potholing, trench support, material handling, conduit placement, traffic control, cleanup, restoration, and other crew support activities. Assist experienced operators with excavation, drilling, trenching, mud removal, utility exposure, backfilling, soil compaction, and underground utility installation. Participate in company provided on the job training for assigned construction equipment. Operate mud vacuum systems, mini excavators, drills, skid steers, compactors, and other assigned equipment after completing the required training and receiving authorization. Drive company vehicles that do not require a Commercial Driver's License to transport employees, tools, materials, and equipment between company facilities and project locations. Load, unload, organize, and secure tools, materials, and equipment for transport. Conduct and document required daily vehicle and equipment inspections. Promptly report vehicle or equipment defects, damage, or unsafe operating conditions. Confirm utility markings, excavation limits, equipment clearances, and supervisor instructions before beginning work. Maintain awareness of underground and overhead utilities, employees, pedestrians, traffic, structures, and changing jobsite conditions. Use a designated spotter when backing, excavating, drilling, loading, unloading, or working near employees, utilities, structures, or traffic. Establish and maintain safe work areas using required cones, barricades, signs, traffic control devices, and personal protective equipment. Clean, fuel, grease, and assist with routine operator level maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment. Immediately report accidents, injuries, utility strikes, spills, property damage, vehicle or equipment malfunctions, and other safety incidents. Follow all supervisor instructions, company policies, jobsite safety procedures, and equipment operating requirements. Communicate professionally with supervisors, crew members, inspectors, customers, property owners, and members of the public. Required Qualifications Valid standard driver's license maintained in good standing. Acceptable motor vehicle record and ability to satisfy company and insurance driving requirements. Ability and willingness to complete company provided machine operator training. Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment after receiving proper instruction. Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, safety procedures, work orders, equipment manuals, and utility markings. Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively as part of a field crew. Ability to exercise sound judgment in changing field and jobsite conditions. Ability to work outdoors and travel to project locations. Ability to work overtime, nights, weekends, or extended shifts when required by project schedules. Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position. Preferred Qualifications Previous construction or general labor experience is preferred but not required. Experience in telecommunications, underground utility construction, excavation, drilling, conduit placement, or outside plant construction is helpful but not required. Previous experience operating mud vacuum systems, mini excavators, drills, skid steers, compactors, or similar equipment is helpful but not required. Required personal protective equipment must be worn and properly maintained at all times. The employee is expected to perform general labor duties as the primary function of the position. Machine operating responsibilities will increase as the employee successfully completes training and demonstrates the ability to operate equipment safely and effectively. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Work is performed outdoors at construction sites, company yards, and project locations. The employee may be exposed to heat, cold, rain, wind, dust, mud, noise, vibration, traffic, moving machinery, open excavations, and other construction related conditions. The employee must be able to: Frequently sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, push, pull, and use hands and feet to operate tools, vehicles, controls, and equipment. Regularly enter and exit company vehicles and construction equipment while maintaining three points of contact. Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds independently and heavier items with assistance or approved lifting equipment. As training is completed and authorization is received, the employee may take on additional machine operating responsibilities while continuing to support the field crew as a laborer.
