Position Summary The Fire Watch is responsible for monitoring work areas during cutting and other hot work operations to prevent fires and protect personnel, equipment, and surrounding property. This position provides continuous observation of active work areas, identifies potential fire hazards, and responds immediately to sparks, embers, or small fires using a water hose or fire extinguisher. The Fire Watch plays a critical role in maintaining a safe work environment and ensuring all hot work activities are performed in accordance with company safety procedures. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Monitor all cutting and other hot work activities for potential fire hazards. Maintain continuous observation of the work area before, during, and after hot work operations as required. Hold and operate a charged water hose to immediately extinguish sparks, embers, or small fires. Keep fire extinguishers, water sources, and other firefighting equipment readily available and in working condition. Continuously inspect surrounding vegetation, structures, equipment, debris, and combustible materials for signs of heat, smoke, or fire. Alert equipment operators and supervisors of unsafe conditions or changing fire hazards. Stop work immediately if unsafe conditions exist or if a fire hazard cannot be safely controlled. Assist with removing or protecting combustible materials from the work area when practical. Maintain a clean and organized work area to reduce fire risks. Monitor weather conditions such as high winds, extreme heat, and dry vegetation that may increase fire danger. Maintain communication with equipment operators, supervisors, and other crew members using radios or verbal communication. Follow all company safety policies, client requirements, and site-specific procedures. Properly wear and maintain all required personal protective equipment (PPE). Participate in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and pre-job hazard assessments. Assist with general labor and site safety duties when fire watch responsibilities allow. Report all fires, near misses, unsafe conditions, and incidents immediately to supervision. Remain attentive and focused throughout the duration of assigned work without distractions. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred. Ability to work safely outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and rain. Ability to stand, walk, bend, and remain alert for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Reliable transportation and dependable attendance. Strong communication and observation skills. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Preferred Qualifications Previous construction, demolition, industrial, or utility experience. First Aid/CPR certification. Physical Requirements Frequent standing and walking. Ability to work on uneven terrain. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to work in dusty, noisy, and outdoor environments. Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility clothing, and steel-toe boots. Work Environment This position is primarily performed outdoors on active construction, demolition, renewable energy, and industrial job sites. Employees are regularly exposed to heavy equipment, moving machinery, elevated noise levels, dust, changing weather conditions, and hot work activities. Constant attention to surroundings and adherence to safety procedures are essential for the protection of personnel, property, and the environment.
