BRIEF OVERVIEW
The City of Harrisburg is accepting applications for a Laborer III in the Department of Public Works - Bureau of Neighborhood Services. This employee performs manual labor of more than ordinary difficulty which often involves the use of some skills acquired by experience or on-the-job instruction. Normally works under the supervision of the Director who issues orders at the Sanitation office in the Public Works Complex. Employee in this position may perform work independently or be part of a crew.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The City of Harrisburg offers an annual salary of $45,847.18. Laborer III Department of Public Works - Bureau of Neighborhood Services (Sanitation)
DEFINITION
Performs manual labor of more than ordinary difficulty which often involves the use of some skills acquired by experience or on-the-job instruction. Normally works under the supervision of the Director who issues orders at the Sanitation office in the Public Works Complex. Employee in this position may perform work independently or be part of a crew.
EQUIPMENT/ JOB LOCATION
Employee performs work throughout the City. Work involves the use of brooms, shovels and trash totters. The work may require more than usual physical strength and endurance. Employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, fumes, hazardous chemicals/waste, and adverse working and weather conditions. Duties are typically performed weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the discretion of the Director. Employee will be required to work mandatory Saturdays after holidays and possibly evenings, weekends and holidays.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Work involves, but is not limited to, the following: works as member on Sanitation Collection Crew. Operates vehicular equipment related to job assignment. Collects and disposes of trash, refuse, rubbish and recyclables (weighing up to 80 lbs.) into sanitation trucks. Pushes, pulls, connects and disconnects containers (dumpsters) ranging in size from one cubic yard to eight cubic yard capacities. Operates handle in rear of truck to compact trash. Maintains regular, punctual and predictable attendance. Reports to work and remains at work in a productive condition which includes not being under the influence or impaired by the use of alcohol and/or drugs. Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with supervisors, co-workers and the general public. Completes all assignments in an efficient, consistent and timely manner. Remains alert and reacts appropriately to the audio alarms of vehicular equipment.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties in equal or lower classifications as assigned by supervisory personnel. Performs work as directed by supervisors in accordance with Article XXX, Job Classifications, Section 1 provision of the Basic Labor Agreement.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and manual task. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual work requiring physical dexterity and walking/riding for an extended period under varying climatic conditions. Ability to react quickly and appropriately to alarms and hazardous situations.
QUALIFICATIONS
One year of prior experience with sanitation collection or in performing semi-skilled maintenance or construction tasks. Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License, Class C.
