AmeriCorps VISTA - Construction Systems Development Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana Gary, Indiana Full-time, in-person | One-year AmeriCorps VISTA service term About the Opportunity Help Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana build more homes and serve more families by improving the systems behind our construction work. The Construction Systems Development VISTA will evaluate our current construction processes and create standardized systems for project planning, scheduling, safety, volunteer training, home repairs and sustainable building practices. This is a capacity-building position focused on developing long-term resources, not a construction laborer or crew leader position. The selected VISTA members will gain meaningful experience in nonprofit operations, affordable housing, construction management, volunteer engagement and organizational development. What You'll Do Evaluate current construction procedures and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, consistency and capacity. Develop and implement an enhanced construction operations plan. Create standardized systems for project preparation, planning and scheduling. Research green-building practices and help document sustainable construction standards. Develop improved work-site safety and volunteer training systems. Create manuals, procedures, templates and training materials for construction staff and volunteers. Test and evaluate new systems and revise them based on staff and volunteer feedback. Develop sustainable resources that will remain in place after the service term. Collaborate with construction staff to support Habitat's homebuilding and repair programs throughout Lake County. Who We're Looking For An ideal candidate: Is interested in construction systems, project management, affordable housing, or nonprofit operations. Enjoys organizing information and turning ideas into practical procedures. Has strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Is comfortable conducting research and developing manuals, templates and training materials. Works well independently and as part of a team. Respects different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives. Is committed to full-time, in-person service. Has a personal vehicle available for service-related travel. Previous construction experience is helpful but not required. We welcome candidates interested in construction management, architecture, engineering, sustainability, occupational safety, nonprofit management, public administration or related fields.

Minimum Requirements Applicants must:

Be at least 18 years old. Have a high school diploma or GED. Meet AmeriCorps citizenship or eligible residency requirements. Be available for full-time, in-person service in Gary, Indiana. Have access to a personal vehicle. AmeriCorps Service Benefits Annual living allowance ranging from $24,962 to $40,869, determined by the service location; most locations are toward the lower end of the range. $7,395 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award after successful completion of service. $400 monthly housing stipend paid directly to the member's landlord. $100 monthly grocery gift card. Health care benefits and access to an Employee Assistance Program. Ten personal-leave days and ten medical-leave days. Forbearance for most federally guaranteed student loans. Childcare assistance for qualifying members. Personal and professional development opportunities. Relocation assistance for members moving more than 50 miles to serve. Service Term and Schedule This is a full-time, in-person AmeriCorps VISTA service position with an approximately one-year commitment.
