Department Manager -
Engineering & Construction Materials Testing Location:
Sulphur, LA Position Summary We are seeking an experienced Department Manager to lead operations within an engineering and construction materials testing environment. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with a strong background in construction materials testing, geotechnical services, special inspections, or related field-services operations. This position is responsible for department performance, project delivery, client satisfaction, staff development, safety, and profitable growth. Essential Responsibilities Lead day-to-day department operations, project delivery, financial performance, and profitability. Provide operational leadership for construction materials testing, geotechnical, inspection, laboratory, and field-services activities, as applicable. Collaborate with other departments and locations to share resources, expertise, and operational support. Manage complex projects as needed and provide direction to project managers, field personnel, technicians, and support staff. Participate in hiring, performance management, and separation decisions for department personnel. Manage department costs and approve purchases within assigned authority limits. Coordinate with branch and area leadership regarding operational needs, staffing, and priorities. Provide coaching, training, supervision, and career-development opportunities for employees. Develop new business opportunities, strengthen client relationships, and identify opportunities for operational improvement and growth. Support and promote a safe work environment for all employees. Assist with business development, project management, department administration, dispatch, and other operational needs as required. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, geology, business, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered. At least 5 years of progressive leadership experience in construction materials testing, geotechnical engineering, special inspections, civil construction, or related professional services. Working knowledge of construction documents, project specifications, quality-control procedures, field operations, and client-service expectations. Demonstrated experience managing budgets, staffing, scheduling, project performance, and client relationships. Strong leadership, communication, organization, financial-management, and problem-solving skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project, testing, laboratory, or business-management software.
