full-time Position Summary Schafer Construction, Inc. is a design-build general contractor and developer based in Brighton, MI, working across a mixed portfolio of commercial projects that vary in construction type and delivery method. We're looking for an Assistant Project Manager to support project execution from preconstruction through closeout - working closely with Project Managers and Superintendents on the technical, financial, and schedule-driven aspects of the job. This role suits someone who wants to grow into project management, with strong analytical and organizational skills and the ability to manage detail without losing sight of the bigger picture. Core Responsibilities Assist in managing project budgets, cost tracking, and change order processing Prepare, track, and manage RFIs, submittals, and closeout documentation Support subcontractor buyout, scope review, and contract administration Coordinate and review shop drawings and submittals against contract documents Assist in scheduling - updating project schedules and identifying/flagging conflicts Participate in OAC (owner-architect-contractor) meetings and document minutes/action items Support quality control and punch list processes through project closeout Collaborate with Superintendents on field logistics, means and methods, and sequencing Technology & Systems Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel proficiency especially important for cost tracking) Comfortable learning construction management software (Procore, Bluebeam, or similar) Uses Microsoft Teams as the system of record for project communication Key Skills & Attributes Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; comfortable with numbers and contracts Detail-oriented with strong follow-through Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications Effective communicator across office, field, subs, and design teams Proactive, team-oriented, eager to grow technical and leadership skills Core Values Put the Project First Be the Problem Solver Always Embody Honesty & Integrity Be Respectful Have a 100-0 Mindset Experience At least 1-3 years of experience in commercial construction; internship or co-op experience considered Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field is great but equivalent field/industry experience welcomed Exposure to design-build delivery is a plus
