The successful candidate must be comfortable managing projects ranging from occupied school renovations and additions to complete ground-up public buildings . The Superintendent must be a strong field leader who can read the drawings, understand the work, anticipate conflicts, coordinate trades, hold subcontractors accountable, and solve problems before they impact the project schedule . This is a hands-on, onsite position requiring strong field presence and ownership of the project. Key Responsibilities Manage and supervise all daily construction activities on the project site. Manage projects from site mobilization and initial excavation through final completion and closeout . Coordinate and direct subcontractors, vendors, deliveries, manpower, equipment, and site operations. Maintain control of the project schedule and ensure subcontractors meet required milestones. Prepare and manage daily and weekly look-ahead schedules . Coordinate work between civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and specialty trades. Conduct daily coordination with subcontractor foremen and field personnel. Review drawings, specifications, addenda, RFIs, submittals, ASIs, and approved changes before work is installed. Identify field conflicts, missing information, constructability problems, and potential change conditions. Immediately communicate potential RFIs and change-order conditions to the Project Manager before additional work proceeds. Maintain accurate daily reports , including manpower, subcontractors onsite, work completed, deliveries, inspections, weather conditions, delays, disruptions, and significant project events. Monitor subcontractor manpower and productivity and require corrective action when progress is insufficient. Verify that installed work complies with drawings, specifications, approved submittals, codes, and quality requirements. Coordinate required inspections with building officials, fire officials, testing agencies, architects, engineers, and other authorities. Manage project site logistics, material staging, temporary protection, access, security, and housekeeping. Coordinate long-lead deliveries and immediately identify material or equipment issues that could affect the schedule. Work closely with the Project Manager regarding scheduling, procurement, change orders, RFIs, owner directives, and potential delays. Maintain a safe and organized jobsite and enforce Grove Contracting's safety requirements. Conduct or coordinate toolbox talks and required site safety meetings. Ensure subcontractors comply with OSHA requirements and project-specific safety procedures. Document unsafe conditions and require immediate corrective action. Maintain current project drawings and field documentation onsite. Coordinate shutdowns, tie-ins, utility interruptions, testing, and temporary conditions. Manage punch-list activities and drive subcontractors toward timely completion. Coordinate inspections, commissioning, owner training, final corrections, and project closeout activities. Protect completed work from damage throughout construction. Ground-Up / Out-of-the-Ground Construction Responsibilities The Superintendent must have the ability to manage the full sequence of a new construction project, including: Site mobilization, layout, temporary facilities, fencing, and site logistics. Clearing, excavation, earthwork, grading, and underground utilities. Soil preparation, compaction, testing, and coordination of geotechnical requirements. Footings, foundations, foundation walls, slabs, and concrete construction. Underground plumbing, electrical, drainage, and utility services. Structural steel, masonry, precast, wood framing, or other structural systems. Building framing and structural coordination. Roofing, exterior walls, windows, storefronts, waterproofing, and complete building enclosure. Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, controls, and equipment installation. Coordination of major equipment rooms, electrical rooms, mechanical rooms, and utility connections. Interior framing, drywall, ceilings, flooring, millwork, painting, specialties, and finishes. Site concrete, sidewalks, curbs, paving, landscaping, and final site improvements. Testing, balancing, commissioning, inspections, certificates of occupancy, punch lists, and turnover. The Superintendent must understand construction sequencing from the ground up and be capable of looking several weeks ahead to ensure inspections, materials, manpower, equipment, and predecessor work are ready before each activity begins. Public School & Occupied Facility Responsibilities Because many Grove Contracting projects also involve active schools and occupied public facilities , the Superintendent must be capable of managing construction while minimizing disruption to building operations.

Responsibilities may include:

Coordinating work around students, staff, teachers, administrators, and the public. Maintaining required separation between construction activities and occupied areas. Managing temporary barriers, protection, access routes, signage, and security. Coordinating noisy or disruptive work around school schedules. Planning utility shutdowns during approved periods. Coordinating summer, weekend, evening, and accelerated work when required by the project schedule. Maintaining safe entrances, exits, corridors, and emergency egress. Ensuring areas are properly secured before reopening them to the owner or public. Coordinating phased turnover of completed areas. Coordinating additions or new construction immediately adjacent to active facilities. Schedule & Subcontractor Management The Superintendent is expected to actively drive the project rather than simply observe construction.

This includes:

Knowing what each subcontractor should be working on every day. Verifying adequate manpower is onsite. Identifying activities that are falling behind. Coordinating predecessor and successor trades. Preventing one trade from delaying another. Escalating subcontractor performance issues promptly. Developing recovery plans when work falls behind schedule. Planning work several weeks ahead rather than reacting to field conditions. Coordinating inspections before work is covered. Ensuring materials and equipment are onsite before scheduled installation. Maintaining focus on substantial completion and contractual milestone dates. Required Qualifications Minimum 5 years of construction field supervision experience preferred. Experience as a Construction Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, General Superintendent, Foreman, or similar field leadership position. Experience with ground-up/out-of-the-ground commercial, institutional, educational, or public construction strongly preferred . Strong experience managing commercial, institutional, educational, or public works construction. Ability to manage a project from excavation and foundations through structure, enclosure, MEP, finishes, and closeout . Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire-protection drawings. Strong understanding of construction sequencing and trade coordination. Experience coordinating multiple subcontractors simultaneously. Working knowledge of construction safety and OSHA requirements. Strong understanding of inspections, quality control, and construction closeout. Ability to identify field conflicts and potential change-order conditions. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to maintain professional relationships with owners, construction managers, architects, engineers, inspectors, subcontractors, and field personnel. Basic computer skills, including email, Microsoft Office, and electronic construction documentation. Ability to work at project locations throughout New Jersey. Valid driver's license. The successful Superintendent should be capable of walking onto an undeveloped or newly mobilized site and managing construction from the first excavation through final owner turnover , while also having the experience necessary to manage complicated renovations and additions within occupied public facilities.
