Heavy Civil Construction Superintendent Job Description This full-time Heavy Civil Construction Superintendent role is based in Westchester County, NY and focuses on overseeing field operations for heavy civil infrastructure and site development projects. The superintendent leads complex work involving excavation, underground utilities, grading, paving, drainage, and related civil construction activities, ensuring that all projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget. Responsibilities + Lead and manage daily field operations on heavy civil construction projects, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of all activities. + Supervise, direct, and schedule crews performing grading, drainage, paving, milling, utility installation, and other site construction tasks. + Coordinate closely with Project Managers to plan work activities, establish project schedules, and align safety protocols and logistical needs. + Ensure strict compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, and industry best practices across the job site. + Monitor project progress, budgets, and timelines, proactively identifying issues and providing regular updates to internal and external stakeholders. + Train, mentor, and support Foremen, Equipment Operators, and Laborers to build strong, cohesive, and productive field teams. + Assist with survey work and field layout as needed, including verifying grades, alignments, and locations for civil and utility construction. + Maintain high standards of workmanship, quality control, and productivity, and ensure that completed work meets project specifications and regulatory requirements. + Communicate clearly and professionally with subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, and other project partners to coordinate work and resolve issues. + Manage subcontractor performance and site logistics, including material deliveries, equipment usage, and sequencing of work. + Support construction management activities such as RFIs, change orders, and documentation related to field operations. + Oversee earthworks, concrete construction, dirt work, sewer systems, and other civil and utility scopes as required by each project. + Contribute to preconstruction planning and utility project coordination, particularly for water, sewer, drainage, gas, and electrical infrastructure. + Champion a strong safety culture on-site, encouraging safe work practices and participating in ongoing safety training and initiatives. Essential Skills + Minimum 10 years of experience in heavy civil construction, with at least 5 years in a superintendent role overseeing field operations. + Demonstrated leadership and team management skills, with a track record of successfully directing crews and subcontractors on complex projects. + Strong understanding of civil construction methods, means and methods for earthworks, underground utilities, drainage, grading, and paving, as well as related safety practices. + Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction plans, specifications, and related technical documents. + Experience with utility construction, including water, sewer, and drainage systems, and the ability to report directly to the site and take ownership of utility scopes. + Ability to manage site construction activities such as concrete construction, dirt work, sewer systems, and earthworks on projects ranging from $50,000 to over $50 million. + OSHA 10 certification and First Aid certification required, with OSHA 30 certification strongly preferred. + Ability to work flexible hours, including some weekends, to meet project schedules and address field needs. + Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel to and between project sites. + Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with project managers, field staff, subcontractors, suppliers, and inspectors. + Solid understanding of construction management processes including RFIs, change orders, and subcontractor coordination. + Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment and enforcing safety standards consistently. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience with mission-critical infrastructure projects, such as water treatment facilities and other essential utility systems. + Familiarity with Westchester County regulations, permitting processes, and local inspection requirements. + Background working on public works or municipal contracts, including knowledge of associated documentation and compliance standards. + Experience in preconstruction planning and utility project coordination, particularly for water drainage, sewer systems, gas, and electrical infrastructure. + Knowledge of subcontractor management best practices, including performance oversight and contract compliance. + Exposure to a broad range of civil construction project sizes, from small-scale work around $50,000 to large, complex projects up to approximately $52 million. + Understanding of construction management tools and processes related to safety, RFIs, change orders, and documentation. + Interest in ongoing professional development and training to stay current with industry standards, technologies, and safety practices. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Mount Vernon, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $150000.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
