Burns Surveying is looking for an experienced Construction Survey Project Manager / Senior Construction Survey Technician to join our team. This is a high-level technical position. We are looking for someone who truly understands construction surveying and can take a construction project from the plans and proposal stage all the way through field execution and final billing. The right person needs to be extremely strong with construction calculations and able to work quickly when our crews need answers in the field. There will be times when a crew is standing on a jobsite and needs calculations, points, elevations, offsets, or clarification immediately. You need to be comfortable making those calculations accurately and getting the crew moving.
Responsibilities include:
Perform and review advanced construction staking calculations from civil, architectural, structural, and construction plans Prepare staking points, offsets, elevations, cut/fill information, control information, and other field calculations Provide live technical support to field crews when calculations or plan interpretation are needed while crews are on site Review plans and identify conflicts, missing information, and potential staking issues before they become field problems Coordinate construction staking projects from initial request through completion Communicate directly with contractors, superintendents, engineers, clients, and field crews Determine project scope and prepare accurate quotes, estimates, and proposals for construction surveying services Track additional work and changes in scope so work performed is properly documented and billed Maintain accurate project billout, WIP, and billing information Monitor project budgets and help ensure construction work is being completed profitably Schedule and prioritize construction work based on client needs and field conditions Review field data and completed work for accuracy and completeness Assist with as-builts, site control, benchmarks, paving, utilities, building layout, grading, and other construction-related surveying Troubleshoot construction issues quickly and make sound decisions under pressure What we're looking for: Strong construction surveying background Advanced construction calculation and plan-reading skills Ability to work independently and make accurate technical decisions Experience with construction staking workflows and field procedures Strong CAD and survey software skills Experience preparing proposals, estimates, and project scopes Strong organizational and communication skills Ability to manage multiple active construction projects at the same time Understanding of project budgets, billable work, change orders, and billing A sense of urgency — construction crews and clients cannot always wait until tomorrow for an answer Field experience is a major plus. We strongly prefer someone who has actually spent time on a survey crew performing construction staking and understands what our crews are dealing with in the field. Someone who has personally set control, staked buildings, utilities, paving, grading, curb, structures, and other construction improvements brings a perspective that is extremely valuable in this position. We want someone who can look at a set of plans and think about the job from both the office and field perspective — how it needs to be calculated, how it should be staked, what information the crew needs, what could create a problem in the field, and how to solve that problem quickly when it happens. RPLS or SIT is a plus, but not required . For this position, proven construction surveying knowledge, field experience, and the ability to perform at a high technical level are more important to us than a title. Burns Surveying is a fast-paced, established Texas surveying company with a significant construction surveying operation. We are looking for someone who can step in, take ownership of the department's technical workload, support our crews, take care of our clients, and help us continue growing our construction division.
