Jefferson County is seeking a well-qualified Electrical Inspector for its Development Services Department. Electrical Inspectors conduct inspections on electrical installations in residential, commercial, and industrial structures and facilities. They examine equipment, wiring, and appropriate installation regarding existing structures, as well as new construction. Work is performed to ensure compliance with related codes and ordinances and adherence to existing building code standards. Electrical Inspectors plan their own daily inspection schedules based on priorities, geographical location, and availability of citizens or ongoing construction. All work is performed under the general direction of a supervisor and is reviewed through records, reports, and oral communication.COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position: Driver's license. Alabama Electrical Contractor License OR Alabama Provisional Electrical License authorized to work within Jefferson County. Experience inspecting the work of other electricians. Experience using and interpreting the National Electrical Code (NEC).TARGETED QUALIFICATIONS
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Jefferson County. These qualifications may be considered by the department when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection process. International Code Council (ICC) Electrical Inspector Certification. Experience in residential, industrial, and/or commercial electrical installations. National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Fire Alarm Certification.TYPICAL JOB DUTIES
Enforces codes and ordinances by identifying potential violations, contacting appropriate parties, and issuing notices to ensure that properties and citizens are in compliance with local regulations. Researches and reviews codes, ordinances, notices, and permitting by reading code books and amendments, and researching new materials to ensure knowledge is current or to provide accurate information to others. Conducts electrical inspections by comparing electrical constructions and installations to plan requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. Conducts general inspection activities for contractors by checking for valid permits, ensuring plans comply to relevant codes, and issuance of Certificates of Occupancy in accordance with professional inspections procedures so construction projects are compliant with codes. Conducts inspections related to life safety, handicap accessibility, and natural disasters by following professional inspections protocols and guidelines to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. Reviews plans by comparing details of construction plans to applicable codes and ordinances to ensure compliance. Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines to upgrade procedures and improve work performance.PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs. Involves visually inspecting fine details in order to identify similarities and differences in colors and physical appearance associated with job-related objects or materials.WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting as well as during regular field visits to external places of business, residence, or construction worksites. Work involves the use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, and handheld devices as well as the use of electrical testing tools and hand tools (e.g., tape measure). May be exposed to weather conditions, such as hot or cold temperatures, or other potentially hazardous conditions, such as high-voltage electric currents, partially built structures, and uneven terrain.EEO STATEMENT
