Distribution Designer Job Description The Distribution Designer develops detailed designs for electrical distribution systems, including overhead and underground circuits for joint use, lighting, and commercial, industrial, and residential developments. This role applies strong technical skills and accurate field data collection to produce high-quality design documents and instruments of design. The position also supports storm restoration efforts when requested and frequently collaborates with clients, customers, and construction crews to move projects forward from concept through construction. Responsibilities Produce electric distribution design drawings and bills of materials necessary for the construction of projects of moderate complexity. Perform field data collection using standard tools, methods, and processes, ensuring project-specific inspections are completed accurately and efficiently. Apply and develop technical skills such as cable pulling calculations, cable voltage drop calculations, transformer loading calculations, and pole loading analysis calculations. Gain familiarity with construction standards, construction and workflow processes, and customer charging guidelines as required for each project. Generate permitting documents and other project-supporting documentation needed to advance and complete design work. Understand the hazards and dangers associated with electrical distribution systems and follow established practices to prevent dangerous situations and mitigate hazards in both office and field settings. Actively monitor and promote safety for yourself and others in all aspects of project work. Attend and engage in scheduled safety meetings and follow all training related to driving safety, site hazard identification, mitigation, and reporting. Participate in storm response efforts as part of a local or travel team, serving as an Assessor and Team Lead Learner as needed. Essential Skills Experience with distribution design, including overhead and underground electrical circuits. Ability to draft and interpret utility design drawings and related technical documentation. Proficiency in performing field data collection using standard tools and established processes. Foundational knowledge of cable pulling, cable voltage drop, transformer loading, and pole loading analysis calculations, with a willingness to deepen expertise. Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate bills of materials and permitting documentation. Solid understanding of safety practices related to electrical distribution systems and field work. Valid driver's license. Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and check, with motor vehicle checks as required. Effective communication skills for interaction with clients, customers, and construction crews. Additional Skills & Qualifications Two-year engineering degree preferred. Experience working with utility construction standards and workflow processes. Familiarity with customer charging guidelines for utility projects. Prior exposure to storm response or emergency restoration activities is an advantage. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on projects of moderate complexity. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing field and project conditions. Work Environment This position primarily operates in an onsite office environment, using standard office and design tools to develop electrical distribution designs and project documentation. The role also requires significant field work, which may involve working in inclement weather conditions such as extreme heat or cold, high humidity, rain, snow, and icy surfaces. Field activities may include exposure to insects, animals, and vegetation that could pose hazards, making adherence to safety protocols essential. Work hours generally follow standard business schedules, with additional time and travel possible during storm response or emergency restoration events. The role involves regular driving to and from field locations, and employees are expected to follow all driving safety and site hazard identification, mitigation, and reporting procedures. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cincinnati, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $30.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
