Planning and Development Services Start Here. Grow Here. Stay Here. Planning and Development Services is excited to welcome a Mechanical Inspector I or II to our Building Division team! In this role, you'll get out in the field and play a hands-on part in keeping our community safe by inspecting buildings during construction and repairs, ensuring everything meets approved plans and building codes. You'll also document your inspections using our Accela system, helping keep projects moving smoothly and efficiently. You'll regularly connect with contractors, team members, and the public, answering questions, offering guidance, and delivering excellent customer service. We're looking for someone who is comfortable with Microsoft Office, eager to learn systems like Accela and Workday, and confident in interpreting codes and regulations. A positive, solutions-focused approach and strong communication skills will set you up for success. Relevant DBPR licenses are a plus. Inspect buildings during construction, renovation, and repairs to ensure compliance with approved plans and building codes. Review construction plans and specifications for accuracy and code compliance. Identify and document code violations, issuing notices as needed within licensed areas. Accurately enter inspection results and maintain records in the Accela database. Prepare reports, worksheets, and daily activity summaries to track work and findings. Research files and databases to support inspections and reporting. Deliver excellent customer service by assisting the public with questions about building codes, regulations, and processes. Collaborate effectively with team members and support County operations, including during declared emergencies. About the
Schedule Work Hours:
Full-time, 40 hours per week.
Typical Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 07:00 a.m. to 04:00 p.m. As a reminder, all county employees are considered essential and must be prepared to protect and support the community and its citizens. Each employee, without exception, will have a duty assignment and be required to work during a disaster or declared emergency.
About Everything Else Mechanical Inspector I, Starting Pay Range:
$28.34 - $31.00
Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma or its equivalent and 4+ years of experience in plans review and/or inspections.
OR:
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Fire Administration, Building Construction/Inspection, or related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience, with at least 1 year in field construction (30 college credits is considered equivalent to one year of experience). Must have or the ability to obtain within 120 days of hire a provisional license as a Standard Inspector in the applicable Mechanical trade. (We can help with this!) Must possess or be able to obtain a Standard Inspector license in the Mechanical trade within 12 months of hire or prior to the expiration of the provisional license, not to exceed 24 months from the date of hire. (We can help with this!) Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License.
Mechanical Inspector II, Starting Pay Range:
$31.16 - $34.83
Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma or its equivalent and 3+ years of experience performing plans reviews and/or inspections. Must have Standard Inspector License in the Mechanical trade AND 1 of the following licenses or certifications: Building Inspector; Plumbing Commercial Inspector; Electrical Commercial Inspector; Residential Inspector; or Plans Examiner License. Licenses listed above must be issued by the State of Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).
Other Certifications include:
Damage Assessment Certification (from ICC), Fire Safety Inspector I (from the Division of State Fire Marshal). Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License. The ideal candidate has the following knowledge, skills, and/or abilities: Please note that these are not requirements but bonuses for your consideration. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) with the ability to quickly learn new systems, such as permitting software (Accela) and Workday. Ability to understand, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, codes, policies, and procedures. Strong customer service skills with a positive, solutions-focused approach. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with both internal teams and the public.
