Position Overview The OSP Construction Inspector provides dedicated quality assurance and field oversight during outside plant (OSP) fiber optic construction. This role is responsible for monitoring contractor and crew activities to ensure that all underground and aerial installations strictly adhere to engineering designs, safety regulations, local codes, and quality standards. While prior experience in Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and residential neighborhood deployments is preferred, strong candidates with backgrounds in general fiber optics, OSP crew foremen, or utility construction are encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities Field Inspection & Oversight:
Conduct daily field inspections of aerial and underground fiber construction activities (directional drilling, trenching, micro-trenching, vault placement, strand/cable placement, and fiber splicing).
Quality Assurance & Standards:
Verify that contractor work complies with engineered design plans, municipal permits, NESC standards, and safety regulations.
Progress & Production Tracking:
Track daily production against project milestones; prepare and submit accurate daily inspection reports (DIRs), photologs, and redline drawings.
Issue Resolution:
Identify construction bottlenecks, restoration issues, or quality deviations in the field and collaborate with construction foremen, contractors, and project leaders to resolve them quickly.
Permit & Safety Compliance:
Ensure traffic control plans (MOT/MDT), environmental controls, and site safety procedures (OSHA) are strictly followed by all field crews.
Project Closeout:
Perform final punch-list walk-throughs, verify post-construction site restoration (sod, concrete, asphalt), and sign off on completed project phases.
Qualifications Experience:
Preferred:
2+ years of direct experience inspecting OSP construction, specifically for Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) or residential neighborhood build-outs.
Considered:
Strong background as a Fiber Optic Crew Foreman, OSP Technician, Splicing Supervisor, or Utility Inspector.
Technical Knowledge:
Strong understanding of outside plant construction practices (underground conduit, aerial strand, fiber optic cable handling, OTDR testing basics, and splicing setups).
Plans & Drawings:
Ability to read and interpret engineering prints, construction schematics, splice matrices, and municipal permit documents.
Tools & Software:
Proficiency with mobile inspection apps, photo documentation tools, and standard office software. Certifications (Preferred): OSHA 10/30, Flagger Certification, or relevant fiber certifications (FOA, ETA).
