Job Description

SUMMARY:
Under basic supervision, protects the Publics' health and safety by enforcing building codes through inspections and detecting violations.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
REQUIREMENTS
Reviews construction plans and specifications for compliance with State and City building and safety codes; calculates permit fees; prepares and issues permits if no violations are detected. Conducts inspection of new construction and modifications of existing structures; issues citations for any violations detected. Researches codes and obtains information for contractors. Evaluates dilapidated structures for safety to determine if the structure should be condemned. Supports the relationship between the City of Roswell and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned. May be required to be on call for emergency call outs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
High school diploma or GED equivalent AND three (3) years of experience in construction at foreman level.
Knowledge of:
City and Department policies and procedures. Flood control design and construction. International building codes. Principles and procedures of recordkeeping, reporting, and retention.
Skill in:
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and the public. Communicating effectively verbally and in writing. Reading and interpreting plans, blueprints, and construction drawings and sketches. Inspecting construction and buildings and identifying violation of code and substandard materials.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Must possess and maintain a valid Class D driver's license issued by the State of New Mexico and have a satisfactory driving record. Must possess a Building Inspector's Certification issued by the state of New Mexico and a Building Inspector's Certification issued by the International Code Council (ICC), or obtain both certifications within one year of appointment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment and at various inspection sites. May be exposed to some unsafe structures, unsafe electrical installations, and high voltage. Requires safety procedures to be followed, including the use of personal protective equipment.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to pass a rigid background investigation including work history, criminal records, driving records and other records deemed necessary. Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment limited physical given by a City-designated physician. Must pass a post-offer pre-employment drug screen administered by a City-designated facility.
CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT
Incumbents and candidates must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and insurability in accordance with the City's insurance carrier.

$83,513.35 per year
