A Construction or Building Inspector inspects new construction or renovated buildings to check for compliance with government safety codes and zoning requirements. Checks building structures and foundations, or provides inspections of electrical systems, plumbing or heating and cooling systems, or building elevators.
In addition to the following, performs other related duties as required. Under direction, performs building code enforcement functions; establishes and maintains external relationships; prepares and maintains records; maintains personal and professional competence and awareness.
QUALIFICATIONS
The training, education and work experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below. The minimum acceptable qualifications for this position are: A minimum of five (5) years' experience in building design and construction for buildings and structures within the scope of use groups regulated by the Ohio Building Code and an Ohio registration as an architect or professional engineer.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are intended to depict tasks performed by this classification: 1. Performs building code enforcement functions; reviews commercial plans for compliance with state and local codes (e.g., examines commercial building plans for compliance with the requirements of the Ohio Building Code, etc.); works with the building official in interpreting code requirements; assists the inspectors in dealing with items on the approved plans; consults with the building official and the inspectors to assure uniform enforcement in the best interest and safety of the public; provide backup residential plan reviews as needed; other backup duties as assigned. 2. Establishes and maintains external relationships; confers with owners, architects, engineers, and contractors regarding code items on building plans; answers questions from contractors, designers, and the general public regarding building codes. 3. Prepares and maintains records; maintains copies of plans reviewed; maintains current copies of state and local building codes. 4. Maintains personal and professional competence and awareness; maintains a current knowledge of the latest information in building, plumbing, heating, and electrical codes; maintains required certification; attends professional education and training sessions, seminars and workshops.
