As a Locator, you are the critical link between the underground terrain and the drill operator. You will walk the bore path, utilize advanced electronic tracking equipment to guide the drill head safely around existing infrastructure, and ensure compliance with blueprints and depth requirements. If you have a sharp eye for safety, excellent spatial awareness, and a strong work ethic, we want you on our team.

Key Responsibilities Bore Tracking & Guidance:

Walk above the drill path to accurately track the position, depth, pitch, and roll of the HDD drill head using electronic locating systems.

Operator Communication:

Maintain constant, clear communication with the Drill Operator to give steering directions and real-time updates.

Utility Verification:

Read and interpret utility maps, blueprints, and 811/Miss Dig locates. Physically verify existing underground lines by potholing (hand digging or using vacuum excavation).

As-Built Documentation:

Accurately record bore logs, depth readings, and utility crossings for "as-built" construction records.

Site Support:

Assist the crew with site setup, mixing drilling fluids, handling pipe/conduit, and operating support equipment (mini-excavators, vac trucks) when not actively locating.

Required Skills & QualificationsTechnical & Locating Skills Tracking System Experience:

Minimum 1-2 years of hands-on experience using HDD locating systems (e.g., Digital Control Inc. / DCI DigiTrak Falcon, Subsite Electronics).

Blueprint & Map Reading:

Proven ability to read and interpret engineered construction plans, profile views, and utility locate marks.

Spatial & Math Aptitude:

Strong understanding of pitch, percentages, depth calculations, and bend radii for underground conduit and pipes.

Subsurface Awareness:

Deep knowledge of identifying and working around high-risk underground utilities (gas, fiber optics, electric, water).

Licenses & Certifications Driver's License:

Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (Required).

CDL Option:

A Class A or B CDL is highly preferred but not required.

Safety Certifications:

OSHA 10-Hour or Competent Person training is preferred.

Physical & General Requirements Physical Fitness:

Ability to walk several miles a day over uneven terrain, bend, crouch, and lift up to 50-70 lbs regularly.

Communication:

Exceptional verbal communication and teamwork skills—crucial for maintaining safety over the radio.

Weather Adaptability:

Willingness to work outdoors in all elements (heat, cold, rain, mud).
