Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Directional Drill Locator and operator to join our underground utility construction team. The locator is responsible for accurately guiding horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations using locating equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and precise installation of underground utilities in compliance with MDOT standards and Michigan 811 requirements. Key Responsibilities Operate locating equipment (DigiTrak) to monitor and track drill head location, depth, and angle during bore operations. Mark and record bore path according to project plans and specifications. Communicate continuously with the drill operator to maintain accurate alignment and avoid underground conflicts. Perform pre-bore walkouts to confirm locate markings and bore routes. Assist in setup and breakdown of drilling equipment and jobsite preparation. Document bore paths, depths, and footage for project reporting. Ensure compliance with safety policies, OSHA standards, and (811 locate laws). Support the operator in identifying and adjusting bore paths in real time to avoid existing utilities. Conduct daily equipment inspections and maintain locator equipment in good working condition. Assist crews with pulling back product, installing conduit, and general labor as needed.
Qualifications Experience :
1-2 years in directional drilling, utility locating, or related field preferred. Proficiency with HDD locating systems (DigiTrak). Understanding of utility construction practices and underground safety. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, bore profiles, and utility maps. Strong communication skills to relay information clearly to the operator and crew. Physical ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions. Valid driver's license (CDL preferred but not required). Skills & Competencies Attention to detail and situational awareness. Strong teamwork and communication. Ability to troubleshoot locating equipment and bore path issues. Safety-focused mindset with knowledge of excavation laws and practices. Reliable and adaptable with a willingness to work overtime or weekends as needed. Work Environment Field-based position requiring daily site travel. Exposure to active construction zones, traffic, and Michigan weather conditions. Requires frequent walking, standing, and use of handheld locating equipment.
