Journeyman Controls Electrician Locations:
Kalamazoo, MI | South Bend, IN | Elkhart, IN Full-Time | $28.00
00/hour, commensurate with experience and licensure Are you a licensed Journeyman Electrician who wants to do more with your license than pull wire? At Smart Building Services, our electricians build the intelligence behind modern facilities: the controls, security, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems that make buildings run. If you want to specialize, keep learning, and work for a locally owned company that has your back, we'd like to talk. About SBS Smart Building Services is a building technology company based in Belmont, Michigan, locally owned and operated by the same two owners since 2013. We design, install, and service HVAC controls and building management systems, integrated security, fire alarm, lighting controls, and electrical systems for commercial and institutional clients across Michigan and Northern Indiana. Everything we install is open, non-proprietary technology, because we want clients to stay with us for the quality of our work, not because they're locked in. We're a team of about 40 engineers, programmers, technicians, and electricians, with offices in Belmont (HQ), Traverse City, and Clinton Township. We work hard, have fun, and take real pride in work that keeps clients coming back. The Role You'll join our field team installing building automation, security, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems in commercial and industrial facilities. You'll work alongside experienced project managers, engineers, and technicians, contributing from day one while building deep expertise in controls and smart building technology. You don't need to know controls yet. You do need solid electrical fundamentals, real integrity, a strong work ethic, and curiosity about the technology that's changing how buildings operate. What You'll Do
- Install low-voltage building technology systems: HVAC controls, access control, IP video, fire alarm, and lighting controls
- Run conduit, pull and terminate wire, and make electrical connections for control panels, field devices, and communication interfaces, to code and to our safety standards
- Read and work from electrical drawings, schematics, system diagrams, and specs to deliver clean, professional installations
- Commission systems from the controller out to the end devices (sensors, actuators, card readers, cameras) and complete the documentation
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and network/communication issues using meters, diagnostic tools, and software
- Work with project managers, engineers, and technicians to understand scope and hit the plan
- Keep customers and management in the loop on progress; check in and out professionally at every site
- Support preventative maintenance visits and system updates
- Keep timesheets, expense reports, and site documentation accurate and on time
- Work safely, every day, for yourself, your teammates, and the site What We're Looking For
- Active Journeyman Electrician license (Michigan or Indiana)
- required
- High school diploma or GED; technical education or completed electrical apprenticeship preferred
- Strong fundamentals: conduit bending, wiring, terminations, and commercial/industrial electrical systems
- Mechanical and technical aptitude and a real liking for hands-on work
- Basic computer skills and the ability to learn building automation software, diagnostic tools, and configuration platforms
- A focus on safety, quality, and owning your work
- Self-driven and reliable: able to work independently and under pressure without losing sight of the team
- Curious and coachable, with a desire to grow into the controls and smart building specialty
- Strong communication, listening, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Able to travel regionally to project sites, work overtime when needed, and work in varied weather
- Able to work at heights and lift up to 50 lbs. Skip the cover letter. Instead, tell us about a time you ran into an electrical problem on a job that wasn't immediately obvious. How did you work through it, did you own it through to the fix or hand it off, and what did you learn? A few sentences is plenty. After you apply, Indeed will ask you to complete a short video response as part of our screening process. Don't worry about producing a polished video. We're interested in how you troubleshoot and think, not your video-production skills. We look forward to hearing from you. Smart Building Services is an equal opportunity employer. We provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetics, and comply with all applicable state and local nondiscrimination laws.
