Job Description

Position Description & Job Duties:
Persons in this position will perform journey-level work associated with the installation and repair of a wide variety of electrical equipment used in the control and operation of steam power generating stations, gas turbine generators, and substations. Typical work activities include installing, troubleshooting, and repairing power station control panel wiring and alarm systems for turbines, motors, relays, and a wide variety of similar remote controls; assisting in the maintenance of pneumatic and pressure sensitive relays and control devices; maintaining standby storage batteries and emergency generator used for emergency stations start-up power; adjusting relays, intercommunication systems, starting devices, and other related large capacity electric generation A/C and D/C equipment; installing, modifying and repairing station and substation controls and building wiring, switchgear, transformers and other miscellaneous electrical equipment; performing remote control and relaying device installation; and performing repairs and maintenance in substations as required. Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and materials associated with electrical work in power generating stations (including gas turbine generators) and electrical substations is needed. Knowledge of generators and other electrical equipment, including power plant metering instruments, relays and voltage regulating devices, direct current generation, conversion, circuits and control devices, common practices and safety precautions involved in working on or near rotating machinery and high voltage circuits is also needed. The person in this position must also have knowledge of the techniques associated with operating alternators and connections for power factor corrections; possess the ability to work from wiring diagrams and specifications; possess good knowledge of the installation of high voltage motors and associated starting devices and controls; have good knowledge of battery maintenance and charging equipment, and switchboard wiring for controlling generators; and possess good knowledge of electrical code requirements and approved installation methods. They must also possess the ability to perform simple tests and use instruments for locating trouble on electrical circuits, follow oral and written instructions and mechanical aptitude. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job. The position of Power System Electrician falls in the Competitive Class of the Civil Service Commission Classification Plan. All applicable rules and regulations of the New York State Civil Service Commission (including all local rules and regulations) shall apply.
