This role is responsible for reviewing plans, interpreting project requirements, preparing accurate takeoffs and competitive quotations, and coordinating with contractors, vendors, and internal fabrication teams to support successful commercial HVAC projects. The ideal candidate can confidently read blueprints, understand commercial HVAC duct systems and sheet metal fabrication, and develop estimates that align with project specifications, labor requirements, and material costs. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Review architectural, structural, mechanical, and MEP drawings, specifications, and addenda to determine project scope and requirements Perform detailed takeoffs of ductwork, fittings, dampers, insulation, accessories, and related sheet metal components for commercial HVAC projects Build accurate and competitive estimates from customer plans, specifications, hand sketches, and field markups Prepare quotations and submittal packages in a timely manner while maintaining pricing aligned with labor and material costs Create and specify fabrication details necessary for production and customer orders Coordinate with contractors, customers, vendors, and subcontractors regarding pricing, project details, and specialty items Secure and set up master purchase orders and communicate project information with the Accounts Receivable department and Estimating Manager as needed Identify potential design conflicts, constructability issues, or value engineering opportunities during the bidding phase Send transfer communications between locations to ensure projects are completed within lead times and customer expectations Assist with project turnover and coordination between estimating, fabrication, and field operations Maintain open communication and promote a collaborative, solution-oriented culture within the office and production teams Support team learning and development through shared knowledge and collaboration Assist the Estimating Manager in achieving departmental and company sales goals Maintain historical cost data and support updates to estimating systems and databases
II. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent required
Experience:
1-3+ years of experience in commercial HVAC, sheet metal fabrication, construction subcontracting, or related industry Experience building estimates from construction plans and specifications Understanding of commercial HVAC duct systems, duct construction, and sheet metal manufacturing processes
Skills & Abilities:
Strong blueprint reading and plan interpretation skills including architectural, structural, and mechanical drawings Ability to interpret and create hand sketches or markups for clarification and estimating purposes Strong understanding of material types including galvanized steel, aluminum, stainless steel, black iron, and related HVAC materials Excellent math, organizational, and problem-solving skills Strong written and verbal communication skills Pleasant and professional customer service and phone presence Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment Self-motivated and results-oriented with the ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint) and
Google Workspace Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with CAMduct software Experience with estimating platforms such as QuoteSoft, FastEST, Trimble, or similar software Field experience in duct fabrication or HVAC installation Familiarity with SMACNA standards and commercial HVAC systems Experience estimating schools, hospitals, high-rises, or other large commercial projects Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
