Job Description

Position Summary The Estimator is responsible for reviewing bid documents, determining project scope, completing material and labor takeoffs, obtaining vendor and subcontractor pricing, developing accurate project costs, and preparing competitive proposals for Larimores Millwright Services LLC. The Estimator must be able to look beyond quantities on a set of drawings and understand how the work will actually be fabricated and installed . This includes determining realistic shop fabrication hours, field labor hours, crew sizes, welding requirements, equipment needs, delivery and mobilization requirements, access limitations, field conditions, finishes, subcontracted work, and other costs necessary to successfully complete the project. The Estimator will work closely with management, project management, shop personnel, field supervisors, customers, general contractors, suppliers, and subcontractors from the initial bid through project turnover. Primary Responsibilities Estimating & Takeoffs Review architectural, structural, and miscellaneous metals drawings, specifications, bid documents, addenda, and other project information. Identify Larimores' complete scope of work and determine all applicable project requirements. Perform detailed material and quantity takeoffs for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, fabricated components, and industrial work. Determine required steel shapes, plate, tubing, pipe, bar, grating, fasteners, anchors, hardware, and other materials. Calculate material quantities, weights, lengths, waste factors, and associated costs. Develop accurate estimates for both shop fabrication and field installation . Estimate realistic labor hours based on the actual work required rather than relying solely on standard quantity-based estimating. Determine appropriate crew sizes and anticipated project durations. Identify welding, fitting, cutting, drilling, layout, assembly, painting/priming, delivery, erection, installation, and field labor requirements. Account for field measurements, mobilization, travel, delivery, equipment, rigging, lifts, cranes, and other project-specific requirements. Identify scope gaps, conflicts, unclear details, and potential cost or schedule risks before a proposal is submitted. Shop Fabrication Knowledge The Estimator must understand the processes involved in taking a project from raw material through completed fabrication, including: Material receiving and handling Layout and measurements Cutting and material preparation Drilling and punching Fitting and assembly Welding and fabrication Grinding and finishing Quality control Priming, painting, or preparation for specialty coatings Loading and delivery preparation Estimates must include sufficient labor and resources to realistically complete the work in our fabrication shop. Field & Installation Knowledge The Estimator must also understand the practical requirements of performing work on active construction and industrial sites, including: Field measurements and verification Structural steel erection Miscellaneous metals installation Stairs, rails, ladders, platforms, and catwalk installation Equipment and structural support installation Welding and field modifications Industrial maintenance and repair work Rigging and material handling Aerial lift, forklift, crane, and other equipment requirements Mobilization and delivery Site access and working conditions Existing-condition considerations Coordination with other trades Demolition and remove-and-replace work Travel and field labor requirements The Estimator must be capable of identifying conditions that may affect productivity, manpower, equipment, safety, sequencing, or overall project cost. Bidding & Proposal Preparation Obtain and evaluate competitive pricing from steel suppliers, vendors, equipment providers, subcontractors, and other project resources.
Prepare complete project budgets incorporating:
Materials Shop labor Field labor Office/drawing requirements Equipment and rentals Freight and delivery Mobilization Subcontractors Coatings and finishes Consumables Travel Other project-specific costs Prepare clear, detailed proposals identifying scope, inclusions, exclusions, alternates, clarifications, and pricing. Review bid requirements to ensure all requested information is included before submission. Maintain organized estimating files, quotes, takeoffs, drawings, correspondence, and supporting documentation. Track bid deadlines and ensure proposals are completed and submitted on time. Assist with bid revisions, value engineering, scope changes, and customer questions. Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and field walkthroughs when necessary. Project Turnover & Support The Estimator's responsibility does not end when the project is awarded. The Estimator will work with management and project personnel to ensure the scope sold is clearly communicated to the team responsible for completing the work.
Responsibilities may include:
Conducting estimate-to-project turnover. Reviewing awarded scope with project management, shop personnel, and field supervision. Providing estimated labor hours and material quantities. Identifying assumptions, exclusions, and special project requirements. Assisting with material purchasing and vendor coordination. Reviewing changes to drawings or scope that may affect project cost. Assisting with pricing change orders and additional work. Comparing estimated costs and hours against actual project performance.
Pay:
$25.00 - $40.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
