An Estimator provides cost estimates for a project, based on an evaluation of the materials, labor, time and equipment needed to complete the project. May specialize in many aspects of construction or in manufacturing and design industries.
The Estimating Manager is responsible for leading the estimating department by preparing accurate, competitive, and timely cost estimates for fabrication, welding, and industrial construction projects. This role oversees the bid process from initial review through proposal submission, ensuring estimates align with project specifications, company capabilities, and profitability goals. The Estimating Manager works closely with operations, project management, purchasing, and customers to support successful project execution and business growth.
Essential Duties and Functions:
Lead and manage the estimating team and daily estimating activities. Review project drawings, specifications, and bid documents to develop accurate cost estimates. Prepare labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and overhead cost estimates. Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotations. Develop competitive bid proposals and ensure timely submissions. Identify project risks, opportunities, and value engineering options. Collaborate with project managers, shop supervisors, and field personnel during project handoff. Maintain estimating databases, labor rates, and historical cost information. Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, vendors, and subcontractors. Monitor bid results and analyze estimating performance to improve future accuracy. Support business development efforts by identifying bidding opportunities and attending pre-bid meetings when required. Ensure compliance with company policies, customer requirements, and industry standards.
Qualifications:
5+ years of estimating experience in industrial construction, structural steel, welding, fabrication, or a related industry. Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred. Strong understanding of fabrication processes, welding methods, and construction practices. Ability to interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical drawings. Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously.
Additional Requirements:
Knowledge of contract terms, scopes of work, and change order management. Strong negotiation and customer relationship skills. Ability to mentor and develop estimating personnel.
